Drivers urged to avoid the area - latest updates

A section of the M66 has been closed in both directions this afternoon following what has been described as a 'major incident.'

All traffic is being held between junction three for Pilsworth Road in Hollins to junction four for Simister Island. According to local traffic pages, the traffic chaos is due to a multi-vehicle collision on the southbound side of the carriageway.No further details about the nature of the crash have been confirmed at this stage. GMP, Greater Manchester Fire Service and the Air Ambulance have been approached for comment.

Photographs from the scene show major tailbacks on the motorway, with an air ambulance spotted landing on a field close to the carriageway. According to traffic site, INRIX: "All traffic being temporarily held and queueing traffic due to multi-vehicle accident on M66 in both directions from J3 Pilsworth Road to J4 M60 J18 . Accident is on the southbound, Traffic also being held northbound for an air ambulance."
