But the pandemic temporarily disrupted this change. Jann Arden was meant to be inducted in 2020 but the Junos were cancelled and she was pushed to 2021. In 2022, CARAS inducted sole member Deborah Cox. Cox will be at the May 18 ceremony to place her plaque on the wall at the National Music Centre to celebrate her earlier induction.
The Hall of Fame needed to recognize artists who have contributed to Canadian music even if they don’t have the same record sales or name recognition of a Nickelback or a Corey Hart. It is also important that CARAS recognize a diverse group of artists and genres. At the 2019 ceremony in Calgary, Cowboy Junkies singer Margo Timmins made headlines when she went “rogue” and used the opportunity to point out the lack of female representation in the music industry.
This year, there are representatives from various genres. Diane Dufresne. whose career spanned six decades, is the first inductee who performs entirely in French. While the Academy has honoured jazz performers before – the first inductee in 1978 was jazz pianist Oscar Petersen – the genre has been somewhat under-represented in the past. Oliver Jones may not be a household name, but the former child prodigy’s career began in the 1930s.
The ceremony at the NMC will be open to the public although there is limited capacity. The evening will include speeches and performances by inductees. Jones has retired from performing, but Robi Botos and Ranee Lee will play a tribute to him. Tickets are available at the NCM box office.Terri Clark will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
