A new Stephen King adaptation is in the works from James Wan and has already found its lead star. The filmmaker is best known as the creator of The Conjuring Universe, which is the highest-grossing horror franchise in history at over $2 billion, and the co-creator of the Saw and Insidious franchises. Wan is fresh off launching another successful horror franchise earlier this year with M3GAN, which saw a sequel quickly greenlit after its box-office success.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Now, the modern master of on-screen horror is tackling a movie adaptation of the king of horror. As reported by Deadline, Wan will produce a big-screen adaptation of King's short story The Monkey with genre regular Osgood Perkins writing and directing. The movie has also cast Theo James in a lead role, who is fresh off starring in The White Lotus season 2.
Stephen King is the godfather of the horror genre. He had a huge influence on me as a child and throughout my career, and it’s always been a dream to help bring one of his stories to life. The Monkey is a personal favorite, with its simple, iconic and incredibly marketable conceit. And I can’t imagine anyone better than a visionary and lifelong genre fan like Osgood to bring this to life.
What Is Stephen King's The Monkey About? The Monkey was first published as a booklet in a magazine in 1980, though the short story was significantly revised and re-published in King's collection, Skeleton Crew, in 1985. The story sources its scares from a malevolent toy monkey who, by banging two mechanical cymbals together, causes a series of mysterious and gruesome deaths that torment the main characters.
