The recent announcements that music artists Calvin “Snoop Dogg” Broadus Jr. and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye are throwing their helmets into the face-off circle bring the number of A-list celebrity Sens-owner wannabes to three, joining actor Ryan "Deadpool" Reynolds. If any more enter the fray, we’ll have to get Ricky Gervais to host.

The Weeknd has supported Ethiopian studies, a Ugandan health centre, food security issues and Black Lives Matter and other social justice initiatives. At the beginning of the pandemic, he launched a line of non-medical facemasks, with proceeds going to the MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund. In 2021, he became a World Food Programme Goodwill Ambassador.

Snoop, meanwhile, founded the Snoop Youth Football League for at-risk youths in Southern California, and indicated in his Sens-bid announcement that he’d like to do something similar with hockey south of the 49th. And, speaking of serving the community, Snoop was ordered by the courts to perform hundreds of hours of such service. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.Snoop is the tallest of the trio, at six foot four.

Earlier this year, though, The Guinness World Records people announced that The Weeknd, the first artist on Spotify to reach 100 million listeners in a month and the, was the world’s most popular artist. In terms of looks, all three are smokin’: The Weeknd with his Jean-Michel Basquiat-inspired hairstyle, Reynolds with his People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” nod some years back, and Snoop… well, Snoop saying that Willie Nelson was the only person to actually out-smoke him.

Many Ottawans have expressed disdain for the whole celebrity aspect of the Senators’ sale, saying it’s simply a distraction. That may be true, and the world could probably do with a lot less celebrity. Yet the positive effect that Reynolds’ and Rob McElhenny’s purchase had on the Wrexham soccer club, for example, is undeniable, and the Sens will likely only benefit from a similar dose of starlight.
