Murdered rapper AKA shined as the biggest winner at the 17th Metro FM Music Awards which took place at the Mbombela Stadium, Mpumalanga, on Saturday evening. | News24Arts

Taking place for the first time after the five-year hiatus, the awards also saw musical duo Mafikizolo receive the inaugural Dr Esther Mahlangu Lifetime Award.

The last staging of the Metro FM Music Awards, in 2017, saw them marred by allegations of corruption and a lack of support by radio stations for local artists by late rapper Riky Rick. "We are truly delighted with the success of the Metro FM Music Awards 2023 which has cemented its place as the biggest and most prestigious music award ceremony on the South African entertainment calendar," SABC radio boss Nada Wotshela said. "South Africa's music artists have overcome so much in the past five years and there was no better time to relaunch the Metro FM Music Awards than now.

She continued to say they were"really excited" to have partnered with the Mpumalanga provincial government, adding they were confident the awards ceremony benefited the music industry and promoted tourism.
