The organizers of Portola Music Festival announced that the EDM-focused event will return to San Francisco’s Pier 80 later this year., along with text reading “Portola returns! This is not a drill.” The festival’s lineup has yet to be announced. Portola is run by Goldenvoice, which also produces Coachella. The event’s chief organizer said in a 2022interview that he envisioned the event to be more “adult” than other electronic music festivals, particularly those of the kandi rave variety.
During its run last year, the event received critique for underutilizing the massive space at Pier 80, despite an impressive lineup that included the likes of Flume, Kaytranada and the Bay Area’s own Toro y Moi. There were also reports of security issues, especially after a video went viral showing a horde of people storming a set of barricades during Charli XCX’s performance. No injuries occurred as a result, but the incident threw Portola’s security staffing into question.
Those who would like to stay in the loop on the festival can currently sign up for email updates on its website.
