Mark Webster, who works in security at the estate and was a long-time friend of Prince, came up with the idea to rename the road. He was among those at the Capitol celebrating the vote.
Prince had his breakthrough in the 1970s, and ended up being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 2004. Among other honours, his 1984 album, widely considered to be one of the greatest records ever made, was added to the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry. Prince never left a will when he died, meaning his six surviving siblings were designated as his heirs - though three of them ended up selling their interest to the music company Primary Wave.
