Britany Güereca, founder of Café Ciro, brought out an order for a customer on April 25 at the parking lot of Tire Pro along S. Buckner Blvd in Dallas. She and her husband, Adrian Cervantes , started selling coffee outside her parents’ house in Pleasant Grove.
“A lot of what I ate as a kid, like Gansitos and Paletas Payaso and all that, always came from my grandparents,” Güereca said. “They always told us that if we were good, went to church, or ran errands, they would give us coffee and buy us a Gansito or some other treat, and that was our prize.” Adrian Cervantes, Güereca’s husband, worked nights as a forklift operator in a warehouse, and a month after setting up the cafe, he was able to quit his job. He now helps Güereca prepare the coffee. Her father, José Güereca, used to work in construction and also quit his job to sell chilaquiles and flautas. Her mother, Patricia García, profits from selling pancakes.
When she received her permanent residency, the first thing she did was go to work at Starbucks to learn how to run a coffee shop. After six months and multiple experiments with flavors at home, she felt ready.
