The NYPD’s head spokesman is set to exit after just about a year on the job — leaving a leadership vacuum in the department’s communications shop.self-described celebrity chefPhillips informed Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell and Mayor Eric Adams of his departure on Friday — the same day Chief Kevin Maloney, the commanding officer of the public information department, retired.
No replacements have been named for Phillips and Maloney, leaving the two top positions in the office open.Phillips had just returned to work after a double knee replacement surgery that had been on the books for months when he informed Sewell and the mayor of his decision. It took more than six months for Adams, who took office Jan. 1, 2022, to land on Phillips for the job, with multiple people turning down the position over the first half of last year, police sources have said.
Phillips, an Emmy-winning journalist, was eventually appointed in July 2022, replacing John Miller, a former top CBS TV reporter, who vacated the post in late June.It was not immediately clear if Phillips, who worked in radio just before coming to the NYPD, had another gig lined up.
