The Super Mario Bros. Movie has crossed a huge box office milestone this weekend. The film, which is an animated adaptation of the Mario video game franchise, originally opened in theaters on April 5. It has been smashing records all this time, including nabbing the highest-grossing opening weekend for an animated film and becoming the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time.
Per Variety, the Super Mario Bros. Movie box office has just passed the $1 billion mark worldwide. It has only taken 26 days for the film to reach this massive gross, providing a triumphant end cap to its fourth weekend in theaters. It is now officially the first film of 2023 to have passed this milestone, on its way to even greater heights.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Does 2023 Have Any Other Billion Dollar Movies in Store? The Super Mario Bros. Movie is only the fifth film of the pandemic era to cross the $1 billion milestone. The previous film to cross this line was the James Cameron megahit Avatar: The Way of Water, which premiered in December 2022.
Because this is such a rare achievement these days, there is some question as to whether another 2023 movie will be able to cross that threshold. However, there are some major releases incoming that have the potential to rocket their way past $1 billion. Several of these are being put out by Disney, including the MCU trilogy-capper Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
