George Romero was once set to direct the Resident Evil movie, but it may have proved as divisive as the eventual 2002 film adaptation did.

George A. Romero's planned Resident Evil movie sounds like B-movie heaven, but it may not have been the adaptation fans wanted either. The zombie genre was essentially deceased itself during the '90s, with only a handful of notable examples being produced. The success of Resident Evil and The House Of The Dead games brought the undead back to the mainstream, and the success of the former was so undeniable a movie version was all but a given.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT After a long break away from directing movies, Romero saw Resident Evil as a chance to make a commercial project that played to his strengths. He penned several drafts of his Resident Evil movie, but producer Bernd Eichinger's dislike of gore led to clashes between him and the filmmaker, who refused to compromise. Romero was later fired from the movie, while Paul W.S.

It's essentially following the Aliens model, with S.T.A.R.S. team members being killed one by one each time a new threat is introduced. There's an impressive roster of monsters too; aside from the zombies, Plant 42, the Hunters, the Giant Snake and the Tyrant all make appearances.

Romero Made Key Changes To Resident Evil Lore This is seen in the biggest change of all, where Chris is a civilian rancher who is not part of the S.T.A.R.S. unit. Instead, he's in a relationship with Jill, who IS a S.T.A.R.S. member but is keeping this secret from him. Chris also played in the mansion as a child and knows all its secret tunnels built by a bootlegger.

Romero may have worked to develop the characters, but his dialogue was often stilted and the supporting characters poorly sketched. It may seem like an odd complaint, but there's too much action in his screenplay, including a scene where Chris plunges into a tank filled with SIX zombie sharks. The Plant 42 scene ends with the heroes defeating the bloodthirsty plant - only to immediately get attacked by the giant snake.

Women are monsters, victims and heroes in 'Evil Dead Rise'When director Lee Cronin set out to make the latest installment of the “Evil Dead” franchise, he knew he wanted to bring a fresh angle to his version of the iconic horror series while still giving winks and nods throughout to his source material. After meeting with Sam Raimi, who created the original 1981 “Evil Dead,” Cronin walked away with two stipulations for his new movie, “Evil Dead Rise,” which hits theaters Friday.
