One of the many viral images that emerged out of the 2023 Oscars was the sight of Angela Bassett holding Austin Butler’s hand as the best actor category was announced. Butler was nominated in…

of 2023. “So, I took his hand and held it softly as the winner was announced. Although his name wasn’t called, Austin is no less a winner. The time had come for Austin to say goodbye to Elvis as he began to embrace an infinite universe of possibilities as an actor. I can’t wait to see what he brings us next.”

Bassett herself had experience taking on a real music icon when she portrayed Tina Turner in the 1993 biopic “What’s Love Got to Do with It.” Similar to Butler’s performance as Elvis Presley, Bassett earned an Oscar nomination for playing Turner. The Academy Award for actress went to Holly Hunter for “The Piano” that year.

“I watched ‘Elvis’ with a deep appreciation for all the work I knew Austin put into his performance,” Bassett wrote earlier in the tribute. “A lot goes into an actor’s finding their way into an icon, not pretending to be them but offering a perspective on the artist as we perform slices of their story. You walk away from that set forever changed.”

“Your hope is that when people see the film, they don’t see you—they see an artist’s journey through a different lens,” Bassett added. “Austin accomplished this with a brilliantly nuanced performance.” Next up for Butler is a starring role in Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part 2.” The Oscar nominee joins Florence Pugh and Christopher Walken as new cast additions to the franchise. The sequel opens in theaters Nov. 3 from Warner Bros.

I hope everyone who bullied him is happy now that he’s lost the accent. 😡😡😡

Bro he played a character. It ain't that deep.

Angela Bassett did the thing (held Austin’s hand)

Everyone say a prayer for the terrible times he's about to go through not playing Elvis making tens of millions of dollars. I just hope he stops tryna fucking talk like him.

He is actually not a winner if he didn't win, so...

Why can’t these people be normal ?

An award is a consequence of your work. Your work is no less valuable because you were not the recipient this time.

She’s wrong because he’s not a winner as he did not win. He lost. As did she. And that’s okay too. Enough with this. Move on.

Courtney musta loved that, lol

Please tell Ms. Bassett there's no need to put on an angry face because she didn't win. Be a better player, ma'am.

Austin is the next A list actor and will certainly earn his Oscar within the next decade. He’d be my pick for the next superman although it would hurt his career.

Congratulations to Austin! 2022 was his year, a star is born!

😂

In most other years, Austin Butler would have won. He was phenomenal as Elvis. But that's the thing about the Oscars, you can be phenomenal, you just gotta hope no one else, namely Brendan Fraser, is MORE phenomenal than you.

Busy and winning. 🤫😘

Hey brendan Fraser, Austin Butler are both great! there are no hard feelings about it! being about Austin not getting an Oscar Austin he will get one eventually too. A lot of people are not always winners. The whole Angela thing no she is not intimate with Austin she is crazy.

Lol

Plus he is a winner of many awards and has won both fans and other celebrities over with his talent, kindness to others and his humbleness and yes he will win the Oscar one day but to his fans he is still a winner and should of won the Oscar.

Wtf does this even me? He didnt win the award which technically makes him a loser.
