"Mamma mia" is Mario's most iconic catchphrase, making it strange that he only says it twice in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. While Mario does speak full lines of dialogue in Illumination's first Mario movie, viewers were expecting a little more out of the Nintendo mascot's first time on the big screen in several decades. While some may be disappointed with Mario's lack of "Mamma mia" moments, The Super Mario Bros.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Based on the beloved Nintendo video game franchise, The Super Mario Bros. Movie takes the Mario universe and greatly expands on it, preparing an entire movie series with Mario sequels, spin-offs, and more. The film follows Mario, a plumber from Brooklyn, who is sucked through a Warp Pipe and brought to the magical Mushroom Kingdom alongside his brother Luigi.
This is partially due to Chris Pratt doing a different voice. Rather than mimicking Charles Martinet's stereotypical Italian accent, Pratt goes for the Brooklyn accent that is seen in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show. Chris Pratt does do Martinet's signature voice a handful of times throughout the film, saying some of these catchphrases, but they are few and far between. Even when Mario does say "Mamma mia," it is distorted and in slow motion.
Mario's Catchphrases Don't Work Without Charles Martinet's Voice The reason that The Super Mario Bros. Movie cut Mario's catchphrases is that they just don't work without Charles Martinet's voice. Mario's signature catchphrases are almost exclusively heard coming from Charles Martinet in the games, with Charles Martinet's Super Mario Bros. movie cameo even using Mario's more common voice.
Honestly, it's good that the film didn't try to have Pratt recapture Martinet's magic. Chris Pratt's casting has been controversial since it was announced, with many being worried that it wouldn't work. Having Pratt stick to his own unique take on Mario made the character work a lot better, as constantly having him spout Mario's catchphrases would have drawn unneeded comparisons between him and Martinet.
His actual voice is not even used
It’s a me Mario.. is like taking Ayahuasca.. let the experience process
Stupid article. Movie was great, and he said it enough.
