Cody Johnson of Huntsville was the lone Texan to win an award. Johnson won performance of the year for singing “‘Til You Can’t” at last year’s CMT Music Awards. He won last year’s male video of the year award.
LeAnn Rimes, a Garland native, was nominated with Ashley McBryde and Carly Pearce for their performance of “One Way Ticket” onTwo Tarrant County country entertainers were nominated but didn’t win. Maren Morris, a graduate of Bowie High School in Arlington, was nominated for female video of the year for “Humble Quest,” but Lainey Wilson was the winner. Longview-born Miranda Lambert also was nominated for “Actin’ Up.”Newcomer Drake Milligan, who grew up in Mansfield, was nominated for breakthrough male video of the year for “Sounds Like Something I’d Do.” Jelly Roll was the winner.
Performers also paid tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd. The tribute performance followed the death of the group’s final original founding member, guitarist Gary Rossington, on March 5 at age 71. The tribute featured Slash of Guns N’ Roses, Wynonna Judd, Billy Gibbons, Chuck Leavell, Cody Johnson, Paul Rodgers, Warren Haynes and LeAnn Rimes.Here’s a complete
