Chaka Khan signs autographs and greets fans following her Q&A session with Shelby Morrison at the Rock Hall. Khan was celebrating her 50 years in music and her 70th birthday.CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum wrapped up its Women’s History Month programming with a special evening celebrating 10-time Grammy winner and seven-time Rock Hall nominee Chaka Khan.
The session was sold out, and the audience was peppered with friends and family of Khan’s. Before her entrance, a video montage summarizing her 50 years in music and her accolades, including her 23 albums, 10 No. 1 Billboard chart-topping songs, seven gold singles, and 10 gold and platinum albums with Rufus and as a solo artist.
None of the recent controversies was mentioned by anyone in the room, though Khan did say she resists the title “Queen of Funk” which Love referenced in her editorial as “too limiting.”But Khan did talk about how her signature sound of recording all her own background vocals and harmonies came about after struggling to find other “girls” who could properly sing the backing parts as she envisioned.
“It’s as meaningful now as it ever was,” Khan said of the song after being asked if it still resonates with young women. Khan also talked about her relationship with Prince, whom she called a genius, and said she loved and missed but wanted to smack upon their first meeting,. “Hey, sometimes geniuses need a good smacking too,” she said with a laugh.
