On Saturday, USA Today named San Diego’s Petco Park the best baseball stadium in America, for the fourth time since 2016.
In ranking all 30 of the nation’s ballparks, USA Today’s ratings team considered the criteria of general atmosphere, design, location, amenities, food and character. Petco Park was described as “the perfect ballpark,” thanks in part to having “the best food and beer selection in baseball.” Every year for opening day, the San Diego Padres offers a sneak peek of the newest food items and vendors. This year the vendor changes are minimal, but the park’s main concessionaire, Delaware North, has introduced several new dishes at various locations, and I got to taste-test them on Tuesday. This members-only club, with a unique window into the Padres’ indoor batting cages, has been newly renovated to connect it with an adjacent downstairs club for expanded dining and drinking. It also has an all-new menu this season featuring items such as scallop crudo with caviar, custom charcuterie plates, yakitori skewers and steak frites. The club has a full bar, wine case, member lockers and other benefits, but it’s sold out for the 2023 season.1:10 p.m. Thursday, March 28.
