That thought surely ran through the mind of composer/conductor Osvaldo Mendoza as he and his wife, Marisol, carried and set up chairs for musicians for a performance of the orchestra he founded in Coronado.
Mendoza chose the latter option. From the moment he arrived, he started forging friendships with musicians throughout the region. Mendoza’s dream hit a speed bump in March 2020 when the Coronado School of the Arts faced a budget crisis and cutbacks. He could no longer afford to stay here, and he took a job teaching music students in Arizona.
Mendoza conducted the first Coronado Philharmonia concert with an 18-string orchestra in July 2021. Then he prepared a holiday concert for December 2021, and the orchestra grew to 56 musicians with strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. But they needed money to keep the momentum going. “It was basically a one-man show for the first couple of years to get it started,” says Wilson, whose group is tasked with helping incubate Coronado’s fledgling arts and music groups.
In December, it presented “The Nutcracker” but added singers from a touring vocal group and, in two numbers, contemporary free-style dancers.
