Personal grievances are often things we need to manage and overcome individually. We can request a leave of absence, take a day off, or lean into our friends and family for support. Social injustices, however, can be harder to navigate in professional settings. They’re systemic and shine an ongoing light on the biases, creating conditions that adversely affect our mental health and performance.
Ivelv explained that this is traumatization, and when multiple incidents occur, it’s re-traumatization. Trauma, unlike heartbreak, is not just psychological. It’s also physical.
The goal is to seek out communities that will intuitively understand what you’re going through and be able to honor your feelings. “Ask your therapist for resources around what you’re experiencing,” Huntley said. “They can often point you to identity groups that you weren’t aware of.” Another option is to simply Google “[identity] support group in [city]” to find groups you can try out in your area.
