Is Hugh Grant rude or just British? Oscars interview may be lost in translation. The actor's awkward interview with model Ashley Graham at the Academy Awards sparked debate on both sides of the Atlantic.

Asked by an upbeat Graham whom he was most “excited” to see win an Academy Award, Grant curtly replied: “No one in particular.” Shifting the focus to fashion, Graham chirpily asked which designer he was wearing. “Just my suit,” Grant said, deadpan. Graham valiantly persisted, asking who made it. “I can’t remember. My tailor,” Grant added.

Graham then engaged the veteran actor in conversation about the Netflix whodunit movie “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.” Grant downplayed his role: “Well, I’m barely in it. I’m in it for about three seconds.”While Grant, who has been acting since the 1980s, is no stranger to these Hollywood events — the exchange was not at all surprising in Britain, where part of the social fabric is to avoid bragging, talking too much about oneself, or even admitting to how much fun one is having.

The comments are priceless . . . All I saw was that he was incredibly uncomfortable. I have seen him countless times in interviews and he's always very funny and relentlessly self deprecating . . . here he seemed to me to be desperately looking for a point of connection - failed!

He’s just British. I’m fairly sure that Ashley Graham has no idea who William Makepeace Thackeray is…

If he dind't wanted make interviews he should not had went to the event, he's rude!

He's just being British. Self-depreciating sense of humour. Not rude at all. 'What are you wearing tonight?'. What a dumb question.

No, he’s not.

Rude.

I personally have a real affection for the British.

Anyone with half a brain understands that he was rightfully mocking that hyper celebrity, hyper promotional, unrealistically hyper positivity culture of that stupid red carpet.

Even with a producer feeding her questions into her ear piece she still comes off as barely knowing who Hugh Grant is, why he's there or what even goes on at the Oscars. Maybe hire journalists instead of models? Hugh did his best.

Unfortunately he's both. He could have helped her out (she did ask some silly questions) and beenkind but sadly he wasn't 😓

It doesn't matter, tragedy is who ever dress that woman should never work in fashion ever again she look like a cross dresser in their mothers basement wearing oversize women's underwear, grabbing a see-through curtain, & looking add themselves saying to themselves, this will do.

Very British Americans don’t get it HughGrant

All power to Hugh Grant for not joining in with inane, vacuous bollocks. He's also having a laugh. Look up his work with and then judge the man ☺️

More of this might get this dreadful cheese-fest of a 'show' to under an hour. He was asked who did his outfit. Seriously? He was wearing a common-or-garden tux. Who cares? The banality of her questions was cringe-worthy. Bring back Ricky Gervais, a grown-up.

Rude

Maybe he’s just attended so many times that it’s boring to him now. It looks like a boring event.

Plain rude. He hastened have a success in years, maybe he is bitter.

I’m British and he was rude and the interviewer handled it extremely well.

60 year old Brit here. I think 20+ years ago there was a huge gulf between what we might once have characterised is over the top US hyperbole and British diffidence. Both stereotypes of course. But mass consumption of US movie and tv output has narrowed the gap for the masses.

Perhaps stop sending Instagram famous models to interview people. Or at least get ones who’ve passed high school literature.

Neither he's just Hugh Grant...not much to offer.

As an interviewer you must be pliable to artists and their personality. Also in possess of a thick skin and a good sense of humour.

Agora falta de educação chama-se humor 🤍

He glanced down very quickly, not sure if he was looking at her microphone or something else. He looks overwhelmed, and Ashley looks a bit nervous. Love them both.. not sure if he's an introvert, could just be sensory overload..

'Sparked debate' is bit of a stretch.

I would say rudely British!

Who cares?

Making a story where none exists. It just wasn't the best interview. Not necessarily anyone's fault.

British humour vs vapid, nonsensical questions.

Any red carpet is America at its worst. Vacuous cringe fest.

Really didn’t bother me at all. Some interview better than others as a “celebrity”. And I may be British. He was fine. Cheerio.

What? Nobody got slapped so this is what you’re going with this year?

He’s wasn’t rude, he just wasn’t faking it.

Why is nobody pointing the elephant in the room: that Ashley lady taking interview is an abuse to common sense

The interviewer put zero effort in, he reciprocated... That's your story. Yeee-haw !!!🤠!!!

I’m Canadian. He was rude. What a strange article.

It was fine! No big deal!

Take pity on the poor Brit, as due to a lack of moisturization, his eye bags resemble a scrotum!

A model should model

Sour grapes, he is going to turn into vinegar very soon 😂🍇🍇🍇

If exclusively British then it’s an affectation.

if it were me, I’d just end the interview right away and thank him. And, move on to the next actor or actress fast. one needs to know WHEN to drop it and exit wiith grace.

An untalented seeking accomplishment, that’s all.

How about we’re the questions stupid or was she just being American?

One thing I do know. He hasn’t thought twice about it. Neither should you.

Aren’t they the same?

Are Americans whinnies of juts Americans?

I am obviously a citizen of the wrong country… I am American and I thought he was funny as hell.

I saw that interview in real time and cringed for her, as she doubled down on her ultra cheeriness. He was just being himself. It was a culture clash. As an interviewer, she probably needed to adapt her tone to her subject, in order to get a better interview.

He looked fab in his latest movie!

it was hilarious, Grant is clever

Look the state of the Uk at the moment. The UK are being the Tiki torches beares from the USA specially England atm. Hugh Grant wasn't rude or anything, he was just over of that kind of dialogue, AI can do a better job. in another note, the UK is a fascist kingdom!

To everyone calling her questions inane: sincerely, have you watched a red carpet before? Those ARE the questions.

Not newsworthy.

He might be rude and British but that has nothing to do with the interview. You ask dumb questions, you get dumb answers.

The bottom line is that he agreed to be interviewed beforehand. Therefore, he was a needless prick.

He was rude, pedantic, and cynical. He could've just stayed home. Ricky Gervais would never punch down like Grant did. That wasn't honesty or British humor. He just behaved like an entitled spoiled brat.

American shallowness meets English cynicism.. what could possibly go wrong? Not a big deal really!

Yes let’s give this known creep every excuse

I thought it was hilarious!

Oh for pete sake. get over it. I applaud him for being truthful.

The British don't care about being fake to American tv.

Apparently people haven't watched enough montyPython

Blimey, what a question from such an esteemed source. 'Or just British' Good grief. Might as well ask 'Is the Washington Post rude or just racist/xenophopic?'

And who saw this?

I hope he is rude.

Are you F'ng kidding me? Sometimes people just don't want to talk. This is a story? Katharine Graham is rolling in her grave.

British and everyone needs to calm down

Just British

Questions are silly

British

He’s rude

Is he rude or just British is my favorite game show on the BBC

Neither rude nor British, just honest. If he'd wanted to be rude he'd have mentioned that Vanity Fair was a book before it was a party.

We Brits still think it is a rude intrusion to ask who your tailor is. Fortunately she did not put the question in the ridiculous manner “Who dressed you?” I fear the reply would have been “Myself, I am a big boy now!” or ruder.

i dont get the 'just being british' thing. i dont see much rudeness in england, even in my home town of london. most people seem polite, as i also try to be. if u want super direct brusque behaviour, try holland or germany. they really dont mince their words there!

She misunderstood the vanity fair reference. I say she had it coming. Seriously though, why was she there with a mic in her hand while she's slow, uneducated + obviously a weak conversationalist? Grant is a smart guy, not all men are crazy about empty-headed girls, I guess. 🤫

The interviewer’s questions were poor and she didn’t know how to follow up and engage in conversation. I don’t think it’s relevant where Hugh Grant’s suit came from or who designed it. Good for him!

I thought he was really being a jurk

he has always been snarky and droll

If you complain about this, you've never seen an interview with John Oliver. I mean, come on. 😄

British rude cold

He's rude and British. Do I get a blue ribbon for solving the WAPO retarded question of the day?

Gotta love how media caters to white men - let’s have a deep discussion about white mens manners - is it rude or just their culture - FUCK OUTTA HERE

Both.

Jaysus, he wasn't rude, he was REAL.

I'm British. Hugh Grant wasn't being rude. He was answering some inane questions tongue in cheek. 'What are you wearing?' 'My suit.' If I was a man, I'd have given the same answer. The 'Vanity Fair' quip was obviously over her head. Who hires these people?

Is he rude or just British? This is a dangerous question and it is designed to confuse and hide or protect someone who did something wrong. It’s leading in a way that makes the writer obviously and a liar. Culture can never be used to do wrong 😑

A debate? He treated her as politely as he could considering she was ridiculous. No debate.

Debate?! Lol he’s fkng rude and unmannared. No gentleman, especially of public reputation and awareness of other’s positions (like interviewers) conducts himself that way with a lady, regardless if she’s nervous, or green, or struggling with her job, or not even.

I thought the French were the rude Europeans. Are my stereotypes outdated? Or are the British the rude ones now.

It wasn't funny or clever. It was just cringe. Don't go to award shows and walk the red carpet if you you're going to be such a bore about it.

Her questions were pretty inane. Not surprising he didn't have more to say.

Ashley came into that interview completely unprepared. She was a terrible interviewer. I don’t know about her entire body of work; could have been an off day. We all have them. But that day, she was not good.

I thought he was trying to be funny or witty nothing serious.

All the men hurrying up to excuse his absolutely rude and condescending responses.

He was rude to Ashley Graham. I said that Sunday night.

Yes, and not typically British either. More bored celebrity forgetting that everyone has to start somewhere.

Neither... He did nothing wrong.... But hey how's are Poor poor woman victim doing today? It's clear, from the reaction from the Media, to this non story....., That woman are always Victims..

This is pathetic. Find a relevant issue to write about or find a new profession.

I'm really busy right now...so.much to think about.. None of which is about Hugh Grant

Rude!😳

Unlike Americans, Brits don’t see the point of banal questions.

I am so happy that I have no clue wtf high grant did this weekend

He answered her mundane questions

The British have always been known to be brutally honest. Some of us Yankees need to less sensitive.

His answers cracked me up

He was real and this was a huge hubbub over nothing

I think Americans don’t realise just how difficult it is to take a long journey from a civilised place, then be faced with banal questions from the vacuous at a sybaritic jamboree

Graham was just a really bad interviewer.

He used to be funny and self deprecating now he just seems better.

Look at his eye roll at the end of the interview as he turned around...he was totally and intentionally Rude.

Maybe her insincere & benal style of questioning irritated him?

He wasn't rude .. it is painful to hear these insipid questions. People asking these questions should do their homework.

We are taking this too seriously. He was rude to Ashley Graham. He is British.

[heavy sigh] Let’s file this one under “two countries divided by a common language” and move on.

Great story you can search about Hugh Grant and a Sunset Strip prostitute. 1995. I could never take him seriously after that event.

Yeah, he is rude but those questions were lame. The people interviewing the actors and presenters need to do their homework and stop asking only shallow questions.

No, just right. Superficial and rather stupid questions…..

Not rude, just real

. He doesn't like being asked really stupid questions. .

Hugh isn’t rude nor just a British punchline …Hugh Grant is just Hugh, Any seasoned journalist knows his crankiness, so all of a sudden it’s a Washington Post story. ? Move along people. ;- )

Just cultural I think. She was being ultra peppy and he is notoriously sour. I have absolutely no tolerance for people who are excessively friendly either but probably would have made marginally more effort for the cameras and rolled my eyes after.

She didn’t get his joke

Tbh, those were lame questions

I'm just glad I could understand the dude. In my experience, most Brits are nearly impossible to understand.

🤨

Hilariously irreverent. The red carpet is a silly ritual, and he was a joy!

He was being very British. Unfortunately, Ashley could not think of a more complex question to ask him. Like, Will we be seeing you on the big screen anytime soon? Do you have your eye on any new projects? He has never been comfortable being interviewed. And Silly ?'s don't fly

Would love to hear Dara Ó'Briain's response!

She was oblivious to the Vanity Fair reference, Thackeray and the word vanity altogether. That was the most notable thing about the interview.

Is an American dumb for not knowing who Thackeray is - is a much better question

Ashley was clearly asking insipid questions and Hugh was doing everything he could to put up with them. I thought his reaction was spot on.

He’s normal. And not American. Not everyone has to be fake.

Might we be taking this way too seriously?

She should have asked him how does he like being back in Hollywood? Does he have any good memories? Has he visited any old friends?

He should have stayed home. Who needs this.

Who cares…is the real question.

Well, the questions are inane.

He’s rude. Everybody knows about how he is. Ask around.

He is rude. Hope that clears up any doubts.

Best interview of the evening.

I think it looked like his heart broke after she mistook his reference to Vanity Fair as one to the post ceremony party. And it went downhill from there. An understandable misstep from her, but one doesn't easily take the downgrade from Tackeray to just tacky.

The questions were dumb...He probably doesn't have patience to these kind of questions anymore.

i could forgive him being socially awkward which is what seems to be happening but the eyeroll at the end clearly says hostility towards the interviewer who is just doing her job,..

But hasn't Grant always been this way? Isn't this his persona?

Why aren't people discussing how extraordinarily horrible Ashley Graham was as a red carpet interviewer? She made Melissa Rivers look like Terry Gross.

Cranky might be the word he uses.

A large fraction of americans need more exposure to other cultures 🙄

Authenticity is more important than perfection

The interviewer seemed like a high schooler doing dress-up.

He was very obviously joking around.

Just British, people. It’s not rudeness. Take it from this Southerner.

God forbid he didn't want to participate in their filler BS. Vapid, worthless nonsense.

What kind of questions was Sir Hugh Excellent expecting at the Oscars? His opinion on the bank run at SVB? Rising inflation and the debt ceiling?

He is not able to talk. He is British.

I think the questions were terrible & trivial. I think he felt insulted.

He was honest, not rude.

He was not rude. Why does everybody have to tell them what they’re wearing?

He was always a kind of Londonian cretin...

Will the media stop blowing up a silly interview? Geez, I guess y’all were disappointed there wasn’t any violence so you have to manufacture controversy where none exists. Btw, he wasn’t rude. He answered lame questions in a very British manner.

She was just bad at her job.

iamjohnoliver you definitely have a take on this.

I don’t think he was rude in the interview.

I must be British, I am American, and I totally get his responses to the inane questions. Asked and answered

Who is Ashley Graham?

Maybe he doesn’t give a 💩 about Hollyweird shallow questioning. He was bored with the same lame questions.

When he saw the reaction that 'Vanity Fair' brought, he decided to have have some fun, in an ironic sort of way.

If only there was a track record of inane Oscars red carpet interviews we could use to gauge this against...

I thought it was fine - not everyone enjoys the BS

Pretty sure that’s just how Hugh Grant is. Doubt it was anything personal. Having an introverted personality doesn’t inherently make a person rude…or British for that matter.

It wasn't his first rodeo at the Oscars!! He knew exactly what type of questions are put by any interviewer at these type of award shows! He shouldn't have agree to give an interview! No excuse for his behavior! Stay home if you don't like or appreciate these events.

Her questions were awful. She was acting like a hyped up HS cheerleader and Hugh was having none of it. Good for him.

I liked it 😊😄

Both are mutually exclusive

Or stupid

Aren't rude and British the same?

He’s not rude. He’s funny. I love him just the way he is!

I don’t blame Grant the woman asked the same questions that have been asked 1 million times boring and uninteresting! Good for him!!! a robot would have more interesting question since she did

Is that the only choice or maybe he's just Hugh Grant, and people probably should know enough to either not try to interview him or just end it gracefully and move on after the first question.

Obviously a slow news day.

He wasn't rude. He just didn't have much to say.

Hypocritical academy worried about Grant's harsh interview? Is this a joke?

First of all, Ashley's outfit was just plain awful. Who let her leave the house in that. What was it? Was not even suited for Halloween or a drag show.

Who the F cares about Holkyweird

He's totally great.....just has never been caught up in all the Hollywood BS🤔

with everything rotten in the world, this is the least of my worries

She's a Model not an Interviewer

Probly both, but he may not have been able to hear and that sucks when people wearing an IFB don’t project for you to hear them after you’ve been stopped 1300 times and asked the same questions ?

I fail to see how answering in an honest manner, without mocking or making fun of anyone, is considered rude. People used to say Harrison Ford was rude too because he is shy and introverted during interviews. Not every actor is gregarious and talkative and that’s ok.

He’s too British, she’s too American.

Hire a professional interviewer to handle the job

The stupid California chit chat, glad to be alive, we are all wonderful stuff doesn't go over well over there. Much more basic.

Maybe he's just tired of answering bull shit questions.

Great answers from Hugh..straight answers whilst the interviewer was trying to kiss his arse

arrogant ahole

He’s great.

No, he just sucks. I knew that already.

he can be both
