Luther: The Fallen Sun takes the perfect opportunity to make fun of the popular fan casting of Idris Elba as Ian Fleming's super-spy, James Bond.

Idris Elba has been a favorite to take over the role of James Bond from Daniel Craig for several years, and Luther: The Fallen Sun makes fun of these casting hopes in the best way. Based on the critically-acclaimed BBC television crime drama Luther, Luther: The Fallen Sun sees Elba's eponymous detective fall from grace while investigating a dangerous serial killer.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Luther: The Fallen Sun could easily be seen as proof of concept for Idris Elba playing the iconic British super-spy. Co-star Andy Serkis also stated that Idris Elba has now played "his own version" of 007 in the form of DCI John Luther in Luther: The Fallen Sun. Still, the film could not resist the opportunity to have fun with the persistent James Bond rumors surrounding Elba.

Luther: The Fallen Sun is not the first time that a filmmaker has attempted to make light of Elba's potential casting as James Bond. Idris Elba played Hobbs & Shaw villain Brixton Lore, who calls himself "black Superman," but this was not the original line. Brixton Lore was initially scripted to call himself "black James Bond," according to Elba himself . The actor altered the line due to the many real-life rumors surrounding him in that famous role.

The Fallen Sun Confirms How Luther Is Different To James Bond As his Luther: The Fallen Sun co-star Andy Serkis has stated, John Luther is Idris Elba's own version of James Bond. With a cinematic history of over 60 years, James Bond is a predictable character, even with the danger that Daniel Craig injected into the role. Idris Elba's John Luther is a different beast altogether in the sequel movie Luther: The Fallen Sun.

Much of the appeal of John Luther is that the audience cannot predict what the detective will do next. Elba also originated the role of John Luther, so the detective is very much his own character, without the baggage of the six actors that have previously given their own interpretations of Ian Fleming's James Bond.
