—the pitch-black comedy starring Rose Byrne that premiered on Apple TV+ last year—we meet our anti-hero, Sheila, exactly where she’s always wanted to be. The year is 1986 and Sheila, clad in spandex and with her hair teased into a dramatic perm, is an aerobics star, stepping onto an outrageously elaborate set to film a routine for her latest blockbuster workout video.
] As an actor, the most grueling jobs can often be the most fun, too, and I’ve been so spoiled with this experience. I was so happy to get to continue to tell the story of Sheila, and the story of all the characters. For me, it’s a very immersive experience stepping back onto set, as it’s such a great period piece about the whole world of San Diego at that point. And then having this very mercurial, complicated protagonist to play—it really is a pleasure going to work.
We did. The pilot starts with a flash-forward of Sheila into the future, of course, when she’s more established and she’s on some kind of set with all of her backup dancers. And then you meet her back when she’s at that sort of crisis point in her life in the pilot. So of course, we discussed the trajectory of that and what success reveals in a person and how her illness would change and evolve, so there was always an arc. Although, obviously, you never know with a show what will happen.
