The first of seven awards being handed out through the night was Contemporary R&B Recording of the Year. Lauren Spencer Smith was joined by Calgary comedian Andrew Phung who co-hosted Saturday’s opening awards gala. Winning the award for the third time was Jessie Reyez for her 2022 album Yessie.
While Lavigne was telling the crowd about her first Juno ceremony 20 years ago, a female leapt on stage and took her top off. Lavigne didn’t skip a beat, dropping an f-bomb while telling the interloper to get off the stage. Grand Prairie country star Tenille Townes, another local favourite, took the stage and performed a medley of her singles Where are You and The Sound of Being Alone. The majority of the 2023 Juno Awards were handed out at a private ceremony Saturday night and the crowd got a recap of the winners, with The Weekend taking four of his six nominated categories. That night, Alexisonfire won Rock Album of the Year for Otherness, the band’s first release since 2009 and since regrouping after a long hiatus. Alexisonfire was the next to take the stage and played Sans Soleil from last year’s winning release.
Can it get any worse? Good lord.
