In his acceptance speech, director Daniel Roher dedicated the film to Russian dissident Alexey Navalny, who\u0027s imprisoned in Russia

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is seen on a screen via a video link from the IK-2 corrective penal colony in Pokrov during a court hearing to consider an appeal against his prison sentence in Moscow, Russia May 24, 2022.Earlier this year, Roher told the National Post in an interview that he was in the right place at the right time to make the film. He’d been working on a different project with Christo Grozev, a Bulgarian reporter and Russia investigator with the Bellingcat news outlet.

Eventually, though, Navalny returned to Russia, in January 2021. He was immediately arrested. Initially, he was jailed for two-and-a-half years for violating bail conditions, while he was in Germany for medical treatment. He was sentenced to an additional nine years for fraud and contempt of court. Monday’s hearing was on one of the many lawsuits the defiant Navalny has filed against prison administrators over what he alleges are violations of his rights. Two more hearings were scheduled, but those were postponed until later dates.

“I would like to dedicate this award to Navalny, to all political prisoners around the world,” Roher said in his acceptance speech. “Alexei, the world has not forgotten your vital message to us all. We cannot, we must not be afraid to oppose dictators and authoritarianism wherever it rears its head.”Article content
