Pairing Chastain and Berry had meaning no matter which way the award went. Until tonight, Berry was the only woman of color to ever win a best-actress Oscar. Yeoh becoming the first Asian winner in this category would have significance as one performer of color helps hand the Oscar to another. Paired with the previous year’s winner, both ended up welcoming Yeoh into the pantheon.
If Blanchett had won, two fellow veteran performers would be the ones to present the award to someone else already in that pantheon. In Smith’s absence, the tradition of having the previous best actor present the honor would be broken, but no one could deny the the prestige of having Chastain and Berry fulfill the duty.
