Starship Troopers may have had an official movie adaptation, but James Cameron beat Paul Verhoeven to the punch with the sci-fi action classic Aliens.

Robert A. Heinlein's novel Starship Troopers may have received the big-screen treatment in 1997, but one could argue that it already had a spiritual adaptation in Aliens. The sequel to the smash hit Alien, Aliens is widely considered the most rewatchable of the franchise and one of science fiction's cinema's all-time classics.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY At first glance, Aliens and Starship Troopers appear to share only surface-level similarities. The former is an action-horror story that follows Ellen Ripley returning to LV-426 to investigate the disappearance of a human colony, while the latter tell the tale of Johnny Rico, who joins the military when Earth is invaded by the alien Arachnids.

However, the book's most obvious influence on James Cameron comes in the portrayal of the Colonial Marines, who are so popular that many fans still aren't over Alien 3 killing off Hicks. The crew of the USS Sulaco is filled to the brim with memorable characters, and some of them arguably have direct analogues in the Starship Troopers movie .

How Aliens Acts Like A Satire Of Starship Troopers' Themes Along with being a highly entertaining blockbuster, Aliens has frequently been considered impossible to beat for its unique "Vietnam War in space" allegory, giving it yet another parallel to Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers.

Even after Starship Troopers' true meaning became clear to viewers, it still doesn't hold a candle to Aliens' incredibly high status. Part of this has to do with Aliens being a huge hit from the start, while Verhoeven's movie had to weather controversy before finding an audience who understood its aims. However, this also reflects that, in terms of cinematic impact and taking inspiration from Heinlein's original work, Cameron simply got their first.
