“It does feel wonderful to be recognized like that, especially with all the hard work we’ve done around the world. When you get to come back home and they throw the medal around your neck, it feels really good.”
“A lot of times we were just playing to bar staff. I remember being in Winnipeg at the Royal Albert and they were just smashing glasses on the dance floor. There were so many shows where we thought, ‘This is just horrific,’ but looking back on it, if we hadn’t gone through that it wouldn’t have given us the backbone, I guess, we have now. You can tell which bands didn’t have to go through those things.
“It was like everyone’s hung over,” Kroeger recalled with a laugh. “You’ve got to reach out there and get a hold of them and not let go for the rest of the show. We needed to make sure they left thinking, ‘I was not intending on having that good a time.’ Our job was to get everybody, literally, just singing along.”
