If you haven’t seen the film, you may not understand what I’m referring to. Even if you have, so much happens that you’d be forgiven for forgetting any small detail. Big Nose is a character in the film played by, who’s introduced on-screen by Evelyn reacting in shock when she sees her. She says of the character, “Wow, what a big nose.” From there, Evelyn tells her husband to give a pile of dry cleaning to “the customer with the big nose.
While I have no interest in taking down the film—I really did enjoy it, for the most part—I can’t just let antisemitism go unchecked. Meanwhile, Slate herself has said that she doesn’t have any problem with her character. “They explained it to me right away, so I never felt it was antisemitic,” she said, in a recent interview with
Evelyn and Joy better understand and accept each other by the film’s end, with Evelyn in particular learning to care for and respect the people around her in new ways. But when it comes to her treatment Slate’s character, Evelyn experiences no such growth. Evelyn’s multiple remarks about “Big Nose” are left to hang like a toxic cloud over the film, with no resolution.
If you were so offended by the perceived racism in the film. Why did you finish it? Your thin skin surely was rubbed completely off?!
slow news day?
Talk about making something out of nothing blevitt93. Jenny Slate played the part. If anyone should be offended, it’d be her, right but I don’t see that (just you manufacturing an issue). It’s inappropriate to conflate the character and actor in a critique.
‘Big nose’ has always been a reference to white people in china. It’s what I was called in Beijing 35 years ago and I’m not Jewish. Seems like you are looking for a reason to be extra offended. My nose is bigger than the avg Chinese nose. So, rude, but fair enough.
I have a big nose, I'm not jewish and at no point did I wonder if the character 'big nose' is jewish or not. I just think she has a big nose like me. What if they called her big head instead? would that still be a problem for you, or are you just the softest human ever?
Paywall
I’ll be happy now that I’m not the only one who was kinda shocked … then met with rolled eyes and~ “Why do you have to do that-can’t you just enjoy it? Besides, she did….so🤷🏻♀️” good grief. Rendered the movie’s ideals bandwagon bs … for me, so🤷🏻♀️.
She is beautiful, love her, and this is wrong.
Lighten up, Francis. It's what the Chinese called all white people. Stop looking for shit to be pissed about
Barry himself is passing along a silly trope.
