Michelle Yeoh eyes an Oscar for 'unseen' communities

"Is it that I can't be here or that I'm not allowed to be here?" Jobu-Joy asks in the hit film Everything Everywhere All at Once.

"You want to have that seat at the table, so you can have the privilege to be seen and heard," Yeoh tells the BBC in an interview over Zoom. "What I'm asking for is the privilege to compete." "Asians tend to not show so much emotion. And I think maybe it's a misconception that we don't need our stories told, which is not true," she says. "It's how we tell the story that makes a difference. The audience wants Hollywood to reflect the global community."She was born in Ipoh, Perak, in Malaysia, and attended the Royal Academy of Dance in London in her teenage years.

"It is difficult to even imagine what success looks like for us minorities in the creative field, until Michelle Yeoh showed me that I could," says Foo. "They were shocked that I spoke English," she says, still visibly perplexed at the memory. "I didn't understand what was happening."

Oscars go to films, not communities.

Visibility is only right and Everything, Everywhere all at once was amazing. Finally Michelle is getting her moment to shine and it's been too long coming. 🤗🤗🤗🤗

Can’t she just represent herself, and not pretend to represent all Asians?

Bs. I've been watching asian cinema and animation for decades. It's usually far better then the dross spewed out by virtue signalling Hollywood.

It was a great movie, great performance. I would give it to her. Not because she is from some mythical 'unseen communality' but because it was a great movie, a great performance.

It’s acting ffs - whatever appeals to the audience!!

1.4 billion Chinese on the planet but this one demands your attention

So she wants to win based on her identity and not on merit. I guess that has been the motif of the Oscars for the last seven years anyway.

Yuck Oscars is trash award
