I noticed that a lot of the emotional depth of the film isn’t necessarily spoken about. It’s kind of there under the surface, but it’s not said so much in words.

I think children grieve differently. I mean, I grieved when I was young, and I very much remember that it really came in waves in the sense that you would step out of it and go into it again, in a very different way than how you deal with it in adulthood – with a sort of adult consciousness. I think one of the rare films I had seen on child grief that, for me, presented it very well wasby Luigi Comencini and I really wanted to find a sort of visual translation for it.

I think so. You know, with these young people, they only read the script once in the very beginning. I want it to be transparent in the sense that I want them to know what is going to be shown and what will be on screen, I want them to know what they’re in for but I don’t want them to become sort of meme artists who copy the words on a page.
