The festival was planned for the week after the Cavendish Beach Music Festival.

At a meeting on Feb. 6, Ben Murphy, CEO of Whitecap Entertainment, said the Sommo Festival would be a multi-genre festival with a “rock-leaning” lineup. On Feb. 27, the Resort Municipality voted 3-2 against a proposal to hold the festival July 14-15 in Cavendish. A public meeting about the concert on Feb. 6 brought out over 100 residents. Attendees were a mix of supporters and opponents. Many local operators raised concerns about holding another music festival one week after the hugely popular Cavendish Beach Music Festival. “We're not opposed to the concert. If you want to run this in our shoulder season in June or even September, we're all ears."

“Do it in a season when we are suffering and looking for stuff to happen," Prakash said in a phone interview."He needed to position this festival more as a family festival." SaltWire Network requested a copy of Monday night’s resolution but was told by Resort Municipality staff it could not be released before council approved the meeting’s minutes.
