For Kyriacou, who is also in charge of the UK’s third commercial network, Channel Five, free-to-air television networks can be sustainable when they become part of a global business model.“They’re part of a bigger global business, which means you can benefit from global investments in digital platforms, you’ve got the shared knowledge that comes out of being part of an organisation … sharing technical platforms, innovation is going across borders, sharing content as well.
Being part of a global company also means being able to distribute corporate costs over borders and invest in content that can be used in multiple markets in different ways. Paramount made money at the Australian box office fromfor example, but it also hopes that having this film on its streaming service Paramount+ will attract subscribers . and work more on co-productions between international markets.
