In 2018, he came across his childhood collection. At the time, he had vague plans to write a series of virtuoso etudes but hadn’t settled on a theme. “He has a tendency to want to continually be praised for his intelligence and he is always giving away clues to his crimes, always needing to get credit,” Ho says. They completed the choreography for all six characters and filmed themselves. Ho took the footage and translated the movement in six etudes. Historically, etudes were developed to focus on a particular technique to help develop the technical skills of a pianist. But they proved to be the perfect vehicle to capture the nuances, ticks and psychological depths of complex characters.

It was, even by Ho’s standards, a complex and multi-layered journey. The Calgary-based composer, artistic director of the Land’s End Ensemble and a former advisor for the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, is known for gleaning inspiration from unusual places.
