Creator Jesse Armstrong has admitted the– which stars Brian Cox, Matthew Macfadyen, and Sarah Snook – has always been ‘present’ in his mind, and from the second series he has been actively considering when to finish the show.
‘From season two, I’ve been trying to think: Is it the next one, or the one after that, or is it the one after that?’ and his family’s fight over his legacy – before he and his fellow scribes even started writing season four. ‘And we played out various scenarios: We could do a couple of short seasons, or two more seasons. Or we could go on for ages and turn the show into something rather different, and be a more rangy, freewheeling kind of fun show, where there would be good weeks and bad weeks.
Jesse admits that even when they started filming season four he was ‘not 100 per cent sure’ that was it, and says it has been a ‘difficult decision’ to end Succession.
