The Normal People star, 27, who has reportedly called time on his romance with musician Phoebe Bridgers, was nominated for Leading Actor at the 76th edition of the awards for his portrayal of single father Calum in independent film, Aftersun.
One commenter even joked about the collective experience of learning Irish at school, writing: "When the Irish Oral is just ticking along and the examiner is trying to help you get the pass!!" Paul's leading actor nod was one of four nominations for the indie film Aftersun, which triumphed in the outstanding British debut category, where Scottish director and writer Charlotte Wells thanked her mother, joking: "This is for you - literally, as I overpacked."
Martin made reference to the fact that despite being an Irish film, it was up for the British accolade due to Film4's investment in the project.
