Andrew Binns, a long track speed skater for Team P.E.I. in the 2023 Canada Winter Games, says he has been working on his sport since he was five years old and recently moved up from short track to long track. - Logan MacLean/SaltWire Network
While most events are in P.E.I., long track speed skating is taking place in Halifax. Binns had an early bus to catch, but he wasn’t worried about falling asleep, even after an exciting night. As a pretty level-headed person, stress before events doesn’t get to him, Binns said. The ceremony featured representatives from both Island Mi’kmaq First Nations, with Abegweit Chief Junior Gould leading off the athletes parade while carrying the Mi’kmaq Grand Council flag, and Lennox Island Chief Darlene Bernard welcoming everyone to the event.
The Games feature more than 3,600 athletes, managers and coaches from 20 sports competing over two weeks. Cole Brioux, a 13-year-old singer from Emyvale, performed the national anthem, while several other local musical acts performed throughout the show.
