Internationally renowned singer, songwriter and actor Mary Coughlan is heading up a fundraising event in aid of the victims of the recent earthquakes in Syria and Turkey. The Big Gig is taking place in Leisureland, Salthill in Galway on Saturday February 25th, kicking off at 7pm.
The Galway native was moved to action after seeing the work of Waterford woman Anne O Rorke, who runs a non-profit organisation working with Syrian refugees in Turkey and is witnessing the devastation of the recent natural disaster first hand. "She told me of a young woman who walked to the camp with her four day old baby. She had nothing, her whole family had been killed. It is not just going to be help for food and shelter, but for more long term help too.
Next up was securing the line up, and Mary says she will be stepping on stage for a performance on the night as well. One area of organisation that they are still working on is finding hotels and B&Bs to pledge rooms for the music acts and crew so they have somewhere to stay on the night, as a donation to the cause.
