A bi-cultural love story with all the key ingredients of a classic romantic comedy, At Midnight looks poised to please genre aficionados and casual audiences alike. The film eschews well-trodden rom-com destinations such as New York City for Mexico, with members of the largely Mexican creative team aiming to instill in audiences a Midnight in Paris-like sense of romance for their home country.
Monica Barbaro: It was incredible. Art imitates life in this. Diego is the best tour guide, of all of Mexico really, but in particular Mexico City, and Cancun, and the cenotes. He really understands the country, [not just] as a native to it, but from a historical perspective as well. He really has taken on a rich understanding of the country. It was always very educational, and very fun, and he's always, like, telling you how to eat everything, and squeezing lime on your food.
Monica Barbaro: In the original script, there was not a dance scene; they both talk about how they're awkward and not good at dancing, and that is what it is. I was like, "Well, Diego must be a really good dancer. He's a performer. He's a singer. He's so multitalented." I didn't say anything, but they found out that I have a dance background and doubled down. We found a choreographer, and they were like, "We have to do the epic scene.
