Gina Prince-Bythewood is finally speaking out about The Woman King’s Oscars snub: “Why is it so hard to relate to the work of your Black peers?”

had a long list of precursor award nominations and the support of two studios, with well-financed campaigns that took all the right steps through the awards season gauntlet. Yet neither was nominated for best actress when the list wasRiseborough’s nomination came after a campaign boosted by just a few dozen extremely well-connected supporters, who bypassed the traditional awards season stops and leveraged their connections instead.

The meaning of awards, as Prince-Bythewood explains, is much more than just prestige. For the craftspeople who worked on, an Oscar nomination would have opened the doors to more jobs: “But when we’re not afforded this type of recognition, so many of them have to start back at square one.” Above all, though, these Oscar snubs did not happen in a vacuum. Prince-Bythewood writes that many Black creatives in Hollywood are feeling a palpable exhaustion in an industry that vowed to make real changes in the wake of the George Floyd protests in 2020 and now wants to claim its work is done.

Black women should have been hired to craft the story and write the screenplay.

Stop propagating a putrid rewrite of history and perhaps you won't be snubbed. The woman king is faux enough to make Alex Jones proud. See my homepage plz

TheWomanKing got snubbed because it was an inaccurate and awful film

franklinleonard “Losing it’s focus on elevating black voices.” 😂 Give me a break. What a ridiculous statement, GPBmadeit. I suppose we have to live in a world where black voices win ALL the awards for you race-obsessed losers to stop complaining. franklinleonard, be better.

Oscars2023 biggest snub TheAcademy 👇🏾

Keep telling your stories Gina and the audience will keep educating itself. Audiences need to be aware of the danger of a single narrative especially from a CIS white male lens & Hollywood/Oscars need to exclude great story tellers from Black & Indigenous people

franklinleonard Asian, Latin, and Indigenous American voices also deserve recognition. The greatest human beings are those who fight for wide diversity versus narrow, self-serving diversity.

Hollywood gave her a $50 million budget, $50 million plus in advertising, and an Oscar campaign to glorify an African nation that sold slaves. She’s one of the most privileged directors in the world, and she gets raving press for sulking about how she deserves an Oscar.
