Local events and things to do this week include a sharp comedian, a sultry singer and a classic fairy tale.

opens its production of “The Sleeping Beauty,” starting Friday, Feb. 10, at 7:30 p.m. at the Capitol Theatre, 50 W. 200 South, Salt Lake City.

The production boasts new sets by French artist and painter Alain Vaes — the first new sets Ballet West has used for this work since the company premiered it in 1986. Artistic director Adam Sklute adapts the Marius Petipa ballet, set to the music of Tchaikovsky. The production continues on Saturday, and again Feb. 14, 16, 17 and 18, with 7:30 p.m. shows each of those dates and 2 p.m. matinees on both Saturdays.
