The only Black woman to win the Oscar for best actress is Halle Berry, and no Black woman has been nominated for directing a film. Still, there are many cinematic projects by Black women that deserve to celebrated, said Autumn Johnson, a recent University of Houston graduate who has curated the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's Black History Month film series,"Through the Lens of African-American Women," Friday through Sunday.The films will be shown at MFAH's Nancy and Rich Kinder Building in the Lynn Wyatt Theater.
Johnson, who also worked as a museum intern, sorted through more than a dozen films to find four that not only had Black women directors but also made a significant impact in its storytelling, she said. "I started out by just wanting to see what films by African American women were out there. There was a boom in the 1990s with films by Black women, but we know there are so many stories to be told."At 7 p.m. Friday,"Alma's Rainbow" , directed by Ayoka Chenzira, explores the life of teenager who is trying to navigate beauty standards, self-image and sexuality.
