Dave Bautista teases his new project The Cooler, a movie he compares to Scorsese and The Safdie Brothers: 'It's kind of an ‘After Hours’ meets ‘Uncut Gems.’ So it's quirky and funny, and suspenseful and thrilling, but also a lot of heart.'

Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista teases his new movie project The Cooler from the co-writer of Iron Man 3. Bautista became a star as a professional wrestler, then became a movie star thanks to his dryly funny performance as Drax the Destroyer in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy and later MCU films. But Bautista has made it clear that he’s glad to be wrapping up his time as Drax, and no longer wants to be typecast as the big, dumb, weird guy who says strange things.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY It’s likely that Bautista never will fully shake off being associated with Drax the Destroyer, but it won’t be for lack of trying. In his ongoing effort to line up projects that challenge him as an actor, and help him shed the Drax image, Bautista just teased an intriguing new project that re-teams him with Hotel Artemis helmer Drew Pearce.

“I have a project in the works with Drew Pearce again, and we've collaborated on this film called ‘The Cooler.’ It's basically about this crazy weekend of this guy who's a bouncer in Miami who is just trying to redeem himself. So it's that, but it's kind of an ‘After Hours’ meets ‘Uncut Gems.’ So it's quirky and funny, and suspenseful and thrilling, but also a lot of heart. I really insist on doing stuff that's got heart at the core of it.

Playing a heavy is indeed somewhat unusual territory for Bautista, an actor who has tended to take on good guy roles, perhaps in an effort to play against his physical type. But after playing a scary stranger in Knock at the Cabin, Bautista will soon be back to his good guy ways in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will see him playing Drax for one final time. But later in the year, Bautista will again be back in villain mode as he returns to play Rabban in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two.

Bautista of course has more projects lined up for beyond 2023 as well. The soon-to-shoot My Spy 2 is one of them, and now The Cooler can be added to the list. Specifics on the project are clearly being kept under wraps, but the description Bautista offered makes it sound like a very intriguing piece, and one that will allow him to further stretch his acting muscles and hopefully leave Drax a little farther behind.
