Exclusive: Ben Whishaw believes Q will be recast along with Daniel Craig's James Bond in the upcoming Bond26: 'I have a suspicion that they might sort of wipe the slate clean and start again.' 🥲

Ben Whishaw thinks Bond 26 could wipe the slate clean, meaning he may not return as Q when a new actor takes on the role of James Bond. James Bond is one of the most popular and longest-running film franchises, beginning with Dr. No in 1962. Traditionally, a new James Bond actor would take over the role without acknowledging the change on screen. No Time to Die made history as the first Bond film to kill off the superspy in the final moments of Daniel Craig's tenure.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Whishaw was first introduced as Q, the famed inventor of Bond's spy gadgets, in Skyfall. Screen Rant spoke to Whishaw at Sundance while he promoted his new movie, Bad Behavior. When asked about a potential return in Bond 26, he shared disappointing news about his future with the James Bond franchise. Ben Whishaw: Your guess is as good as mine. I have not heard anything.

Whishaw's Q could easily fit into the next Bond movie, but his thought that Bond 26 may opt for a total do-over makes sense. Craig's time as Bond was very different from past iterations, which followed the agent from his early days in Casino Royale to his retirement and eventual death in No Time to Die. Craig's Bond focused on character development with a more grounded and grittier approach, shedding the character's usual camp.

If the next Bond movie takes a different approach to the action franchise, stepping away from the grittier style and leaning into the more fun elements of James Bond, bringing in a new supporting cast would further solidify this change. The already existing characters could make a tonal shift feel out of place, especially after they saw their friend and ally sacrifice himself to save the world.

WhishawUpdates Frankly, if Ben Whishaw doesn't return as Q, I will not see the movie. It's really that simple.

I want Ben

Wishaw is amazing but if they are clear they don't want a 'Bond is a codename' thing, then I'd rather each series goes full 'clean slate'. I love how Daniel Craig's arc is mostly self contained (if you forget everything before Casino). Makes it more satisfying to rewatch.

WhishawUpdates According to the 007 James Bond history The Quartermaster can and has been played by the same Character through several Bonds. The Quartermaster Q in the next Bond movie 🎥 must be The awesome Ben Whishaw!

johndelancie

it's logical that the restart of the saga should be with a complete new cast. Eddie Redmayne would be excellent to play the role of Q.

Wipe it thoroughly. Zero woke zone.

Ben is very good as 'Q'. Hope they keep him. And 'M' too. We need continuity. I would like to see Alessandro Borghi (Surburra) get Bond. Young enough to survive a 55 film franchise. This guy has the menace too.

Bring back John Cleese!

Anyway go watch This Is Going to Hurt, my favorite show of 2022. Ben deserved an Emmy for his acting

Cleese & Pierce are returning

“Wipe the slate clean“ yeah I think the cluster bomb that killed bond did that!

I think it's inevitable.

Nooooooooo he is the best Q ever you cant recast him

I would like to see Ben Wishaw cast as Doctor Who. He has the right look and personality to be an excellent incarnation

In what way?

It’s no shock, I’d heard EON felt the main MI6 part of the cast were getting too expensive Still a shame though

Good. The last Bond was sh!t.

Obviously

He and the others toasted Bond’s demise so there should be a new M, Q and Moneypenny. Not that any of this makes any sense.

Hope they keep both M andQ.

A better idea would be to adapt

That's unfortunate given many were spoiled by the longevity, wit and stalwart nature of Desmond Llewelyn's 'Q'. Personally, I believe Mr. Whishaw is of the same mold as the late Mr. Llewelyn.

They should keep this Q, he's been wonderful.

I love him but that's kinda obvious

MI6 is ALL Timelords.

I hope not!

Hope so

So in the previous film, the 'supporting' cast commemorates Bond and raises a glass, then in the next installment, he miraculously re-appears and they act as if nothing has happened. Give me a break, NTD meant a completely fresh start.

I like the concept from the latest novels that have Q as an AI

I mean, at least bring back either Naomi Harris or Ralph Fiennes. It's not like the series hasn't swapped out a leading actor and kept other side actors. Though, I don't want to add credibility to the while 'James Bond is an alias' debate either, though

I hope they keep the same actors for q, m, tanner and moneypenny like they kept judi dench’s m

Thank the heavens. I'm sure many like him but I didn't care for his portrayal of the role.

Taking Paddington away from Bond?

So, female Q then. Nothing that hasn't been done before.

If true, this would be the first time in the series (since 1962) that no actor returned from the previous film.

They should NOT recast Q.

Well after the last 5 movies a clean slate would be good

What a pity! ☹ I loved the trio Whishaw/Harris/Fiennes, all brilliant in their respective roles.

I enjoyed the whole supporting cast (Whishaw, Harris, Fiennes and Kinnear) but the Craig Era needs to remain distinct. Sadly, recast.

In my opinion, thank god
