Actor Alan Cumming gives back his OBE award over 'toxicity of empire'

Cumming said he was awarded the OBE for his work as an actor as well as "for activism for equal rights for the gay and lesbian community". "Also, thankfully, times and laws in the US have changed, and the great good the award brought to the LGBTQ+ cause back in 2009 is now less potent than the misgivings I have being associated with the toxicity of empire."Cumming, who has won two Tony awards and a Laurence Olivier award for his theatre work, got U.S. citizenship in 2008."I... explained my reasons and reiterated my great gratitude for being given it in the first place.

But kept the money from its citizens

Just like getting a tattoo it's a brain fart then later you regret what you have done. You wake up next to a ugly girl after a night of drinking and you can forget about it the next day. Not that crap.

Hell of an actor, but he's fooling nobody here. It would have been damaging to his career if he refused the Queen. However, since he passing he can play it up for all his friends and squeeze a bit of PR for is upcoming project(s).

A tad too late Mr Cumming. The British Empire began to decolonize in 1947 after Gandhi and Nehru, whose achievement, argued throughout with clarity and knowledge, was also an act of reconciliation. It is unfair to pin postcolonial toxicity only on colonial antecedents.

He also wants Scottish Independence. I wonder why he accepted this award at the first place. As we all know there are a lot others who has declined the honours.

And then let him refuse the citizenship of the 'toxic Empire'.
