Ohio State's defense committed too many late-season blunders, but how much of that can be pinned on Jim Knowles? Film Study takes a deeper look:

took on more of a burden than any other position within the unit, allowing the eight other defenders to have fewer responsibilities on any given snap. As Knowles admitted in both spring and fall camp, the entire system largely depended on these three players and their ability to execute more complex assignments than had been asked of them in the past.drop 30 yards into the middle of the field and read the eyes of the quarterback.

The result was a simplified approach for the defensive line and linebackers that allowed them to focus on stuffing inside run gaps while the safeties worked together to handle action on the edges. By then, such mistakes had become all too familiar for Ohio State fans who became all too accustomed to seeing the Buckeyes give up big plays last season, especially when Ransom was involved. The junior finished third on the team in tackles and did an excellent job in man coverage against three of the nation's best tight ends in Notre Dame's Michael Mayer, Iowa's Sam LaPorta, and Georgia's Brock Bowers, living up to his high billing as a recruit.

By the season's end, many began to conflate fundamental mistakes like these with schematic decisions made by the new coordinator. However, the threat of surrendering an explosive play was always in effect with Knowles at the helm, as his style of play-calling at Oklahoma State was of the high-risk/high-reward variety.

Knowles failed his 2 most difficult exams. Still went pass “Go” - collected $2mi. In those 2 games how many times did we see a DB just fall down (2), get completely turned around (1) or just miss a tackle in open field that led to TDs. Knowles gets the blame but talent is suspect

Never was impressed by knowles

There was more than enough ability among the DBs to be at the very least technically- and assignment-sound enough to limit the absurd number of explosives vs. the best offenses OSU saw in '22. The delta between that ability and the results on the field is coaching.

High Risk/High a reward is accurate but the risk is mitigated if you have DBs that can hold up 1 on 1 in coverage. If that 2019 squad with Arnette, Okudah, Wade and Fuller had played in this scheme, that team would’ve been extremely tough to score on.

Year 1 installing a completely new system and they finished top 25 in defense. I think Knowles and co. will be just fine

But like how do you not make any adjustments after that 1st half

Knowles laid an egg. Gotta be a lot better next year.

The dude isn't a miracle worker. People expected this defense to go from awful to a top 5 D in the country or something. It was much improved and based on knowles track record every one of his defenses gets better as he is there longer

I like your analysis. One thing that bothers me is you'd figure 4-5 star DB's would be wanting to come to showcase their coverage in this defense. He's one year in, so I'd like to see year two before any, 'Fire Knowles' criticism.

It was the situations that made these calls so egregious. When your up two scores in the fourth you force them to throw it underneath and to burn the clock. Basic situational awareness. You don’t set your players up for failure.

Defense wins championships and his defense gave up to many point’s especially at the end of the season along with 4th quarter meltdowns

Not impressed with Knowles at all.

You guys have any film on the hit that took Marv out of the Peach? You know… the overruled targeting call that involved no other element of an illegal hit! 🤬 Thx!

After this past season I am not gonna buy into any hype that they are better. They have to show up the last game in November and after until I buy into to anything with this defense.

It's literally 1 season. Our fans are insufferable

I hope he comes out pissed off this season and the defense starts shutting teams out

Failures in technique instead of scheme? Maybe… But a coach being stubborn with his system instead of playing the right coverages seemed to be the case here.

Good analysis and supporting facts. Maybe give a lesson to some of your brethren.

To me, it was more of an issue of not making adjustments at the right time. Too many coaches are married to ‘their plan’ vs being able to make game time adjustments. Year 2 will be better

He should have self scouted during the season !!!

Too many failures in technique rather than scheme… maybe, but 2023 pudding will tell!!

He’s on notice, that defense cost us a ring

Never understood why we were not playing zone late in the game with a significant lead

He threw the very successful rushman package away for his zero coverage blitz. He chokes in the 4th quarter. And tanner is his player and he was the worst safety back there. Should've hired iowa dc.

It was his first yr. There was massive improvement.

He may not be directly to blame, but he put the players in positions to fail. The play calling in the 4th quarter of the playoff game was trash.

Gotta give the man some time.

He put them in situations that they were sure to fail. Coaching is knowing your players. He has to do better (see: man, cover zero).

Need better players on D…..

Answer: all of it.

His job was to control the best teams on their schedule. That didn’t happen. Not even close. Here is an idea . Line’em up and don’t f—k them up. If the O is going to give you 40pts a game coaching D is kinda easy

Do Big 12 teams have defenses Get a DC out of the SEC

First year of a new D; big improvement over the year previous. This year has the potential to be one of the best Buckeye defenses in LONG TIME!! The front 7 is basically back, I see Styles as an upgrade.

If he was responsible for putting that secondary in cover 0 numerous times the blame sits squarely on him.

The corners need help, too much 8 in the box

All of it.

Jim Knowles didn't fall down and go boom in coverage.

The thing is I never seen him miss a tackle!

Everyone needs to stop picking on Knowles, he showed huge improvement over prior year. Perhaps it takes longer than 1 season to completely fix a broken D?

Great explainer, thanks. I understood nearly everything you said. But doesn't technique come down to coaching too? Honestly evaluate Eliano and Walton, are they doing a good job? Coombs was an outstanding position coach, really miss his corner play.

He just got overly aggressive, and left some players on islands which didn’t bode well. Think it’s fine if the players are more experienced in his system.
