Revising fiction

THE episode of the GMA-7 TV show 'Maria Clara at Ibarra' last Friday created some controversy, incurring the ire of some, including academics, because it radically changed the narrative which Jose Rizal wrote. It showed Crisostomo Ibarra, played by Dennis Trillo, publicly rebelling against the oppressive structures of Spanish Church and State.

One notable example of this is the movie 'Maleficent' which effectively altered the patriarchal trope of a sleeping princess being awakened by a prince's kiss. This was radically changed into one where it was the witch, who is now imaged no longer as pure evil, who actually kissed her.
