Provisional figures show the number of road deaths in 2022 increased by 13% on the previous year. The Road Safety Authority said it is particularly concerned by the deaths of 41 pedestrians, which is almost double the figure for 2021 | Read more:

The provisional figures from the RSA found 155 people died in 149 road crashes in 2022 compared to 137 deaths in 124 crashes the previous year.

The figures also show there were over 1,290 serious injuries recorded up to 29 December, down slightly from over 1,340 up to the same period in 2021. "The high number of pedestrian deaths, who are the most vulnerable of road users in our community, is also worrying. Working together, we can reverse this trend in 2023."

A responsible attitude by all Pedestrians, cyclists, and car drivers. I have noticed a big increase in Pedestrians crossing roads with no regard for their own safety, or the safety of other road users. Often on their phones.

How many journeys made between the years ? How many kerbs of movement did we have. How many buses didn’t travel. We had lockdowns and all sorts. What the stat to the years precious, 2019, 2018 ? Ask some questions please…

Looks like the speed cameras and relentless harassment my the Gardaí is not the answer.

We just should ban cars

Majority on rural roads, no public transport, no footpaths….. why! Piss poor planning. One of houses, no infrastructure… but we keep on letting them be built

Give us the provisional sudden deaths for this period please, because they are rising rapidly, why would that be?

Concerned are they? How many adverts instructing people about how to cross the road were shown on RTE in 2022? The proportion aimed at adults would be interesting to know also.

BS, What this article fails to mention is we had a lockdown for half of 2021. Really treating the population like a bunch of dopes. Poor of RTE & the RSA not to mention this as a serious factor in the increase. I'm all for Rd safety but don't treat people like a bunch of thicks.

How can an institution whose sole purpose is safety on the roads have a 100% increase in pedestrians deaths and just walk away with it? RSAIreland

Happy New Year RTE

With twice as many fatalities on rural roads it's good to see that they're going to do more than simply dishing out hi-vis by reviewing the 80km/h national speed limit.

Does RSAIreland ever reflect on the impact of its spending considerable budget and energy on victim-blaming initiatives such as high-vis clothing and prioritising pedestrian over driver education?

20% of people killed didn't have a seat belt on, most of the deaths on country roads... and yet the ONLY answer is to reduce all speed limits. Lazy thinking... targeting the easy, (and lucrative) speeding fine industry. How about an honest look at what's going on?

Sure the green party will build 100000000 more bike lanes to fix that and tax the shite out of drivers.

Hello base rate fallacy, my old friend.

Better public transport would reduce car usage. It needs to be a lot better than it is now. Right now, it's awful.

We were in lockdown for half the year in 2021…?
