Glorious ratio

An article dancing on HMV's grave? I suppose it makes a change from ultra-bland people talking about blind dates they went on, or Mariella Frostrup giving uneducated advice to people who don't know whether they should leave their cheating partner or not... ZZzzzZzzzZ

Thank you for the News, The Gaurdian, but we don’t need you any more | me

Thank you Penny and the Guardian. We have the internet now so we don’t need you anymore

Don’t write WE, this is your opinion not the nations, such a poorly ill timed article, people are going to lose jobs and you print this utter rubbish, shame on you.

pennyanderson1 what a load of complete dross. I genuinely hope you barely scrape a living writing such complete and utter tripe.

I still shop at HMV and Fopp. and will miss them immensely. I hope you still have this attitude when the death nail strikes the guardian. Sad.

Sadly out of touch journalism; HMV may not be the trendy backstreet record shop, but it’s the entry point for most. The masses turn into the trendy, the masses have access to many areas not stocked in backstreets.

I have alot of time for the . Many well considered and intelligent articles but you have seriously let yourself down with this ill informed poorly edited scrawl.

Wow what a pretentious piece of crap this is! Clearly Penny is not buying any music after mike and the mechanics or been in HMV EVER. Its folks jobs you cretin! Hope yours isn't next. Should be with this dreadful article. Not journalism, snobbery!

A record buyer will go into any record shop to find the holy grail. Worcester has lost 2 independents in the past years leaving HMV as the only alternative for new music as there is a decent 2nd hand in the market hall. Now we may have none, shamefortherecordbuyers

Thank you for the articles, Guardian, but we don't need you any more.

HMV's collapse into administration is not about downloads and Amazon. It is the result of venture capitalism. And that is why HMV will be back to fail again. A blog post.

Fingers crossed we will all be able to say the same about the toilet paper that you write for soon and we can rejoice at so many people losing their jobs too.

Hi Penny, do we need your paper anymore?

Can we look forward to a response from Penny to the furore her piece has raised?

HMV may not have been 'cool' but 30 years ago as an avid record collector I made many purchases from there. Loads of imports and limited edition new releases.

Yep, she seems almost gleeful at the thought of job losses and a chain collapsing. Not very socialist, is she?!

Astonished that this got past an editor, let alone got published. Snobbish, insensitive, and just wrong on all counts. Poor form .

This article is just total snobbery! ‘The first port of call for beginners and general music consumers’ Beginners Think the guardian need to find a ‘edgy’ new journalist!

Categorising music lovers as beginners/novices! absurdly snobbish! I wish we could all be ‘professional’ music lovers like pennyanderson1

Really poor.

Both a poorly researched and in poor taste article showing little empathy for hardworking retail employees who are at risk of redundancy.

Wow, that hurt! HMV recommended some of the records which changed my life but they wouldn’t be cool enough to mention here and I’m not cool enough to even know what you’re talking about but I do know this smacks of hipster twattery.

Get a grip Guardian. Ditch crap articles like this one -EVERY EVERY EVERY record store is a potential Championship Vinyl type shop not just the indies. Bought many a fine record and met many fine people in hmv as well as some indies. -

Very poor article

Actually, we don't need shitty articles from you. So there's that. 🙄

I’m pretty sure I need HMV/Fopp a good deal more than I need the current incarnation of the Guardian.

someone who bought music from Woolies, hmvtweets PiccadillyRecs and many other record shops, I find this article disappointing, and especially harsh to all those who could possibly lose their jobs, variety is the spice, the possibility of HMV closing

What an atrocious, badly written and misinformed article.

Typical Grauniad, elitist, snobbish, head up it's own fundament bollocks...

Don't know what age you are Penny but I would imagine under 50. There are over 2000 jobs at stake , how many are Guardian readers ( or not now)? There is also a generation who don't do technology, but who cares about the old( oops one day you will be!😱)

Idiotic article this

pennyanderson1 You are one professional jimmy rustler. Consider me triggered 😧

Gobshite

Piss poor journalism.

Clown.

Another huge Guardian misstep here. Beyond trying to defend you anymore

Very very disappointing and inaccurate article by a journalist who clearly doesn’t know what she is talking about

.This is a total abomination of an article. I worked in one of the stores you‘re so quick to disparage, with individuals whose immense knowledge of deep cuts, rare records & imports was utilised by customers daily. Some of whom have gone on to release successful albums themselves

shoddy, snide and ill-informed pennyanderson1

Utter shit show of an article this

I sincerely hope penny Anderson never gets her name in print again after this insincere, ill-informed, and very much misjudged, load of shite.

judging by me and the masses of customers in the Taunton store yesterday, we do! I felt quite empowered too buying a britney spears calendar along with a john grant and PSB cd together with mousehunt and wall.e dvds. very much enjoy that HMV shopping experience ❤✌

Snobby, uninformed crap from there

What a pile of drivel! Also the stupidity of mentioning Fopp Records, which is owned by HMV is the ridiculous cherry on top of this elitist claptrap.

a newspaper, stating that we don't need record shops anymore. Interesting. A very opinionated article that hasn't listened to the opinions of the public, just one writer aiming to cause controversy by insulting unnecessary

What we don’t need any more is newspapers.

Her last record was probably kajagoogo sad cow

elitist garbage, Penny should be ashamed

This is depressing nonsense what credentials does pennyanderson1 have?. Music fans are'nt snobby about where they buy. Piccadilly etc are great but people still need mainstream music, headphones and stuff for kids etc. I mourn the loss of another high street favourite.

What a load of old rubbish.

Ok, Guardian, no need to rub it in. Bit of respect to HMV and their staff, who may soon be out of work, wouldn’t go amiss. You stick to your free-with-newspaper Classical gas cds then, a lot of real music fans like to be able to go out and choose and discover their tastes.

I hope blogs and YouTube drive Penny Anderson out of a job and down the job centre - the fucking Snide.

Shit for brains. You understand nothing. 1/3 of all vinyl/CD sales were through HMV, without them companies may not produce physical product. London HMV used to be most knowledgeable staff in town with specialist sections.

What utter rubbish - as ex staff HMV Northumberland St, Newcastle, along with the indies & Virgin a vital part of the scene, punk/new wave 7” was most browsed shelf in town, store once run by Keith Armstrong & home of KwareRecords Prefabsprout et al

This is a disgusting piece. Pure and simple.

The writer doesn't appear to know that Fopp is owned by HMV. A shoddy piece of work.

It’s sad that hmv are struggling spent many a happy hour trawling through their LPs hope a rescue package or a relaunch of sorts can keep it afloat

I look forward to reading an equally ill-informed piece when the Guardian folds and you lot get made redundant. Which will probably be quite soon given your poor performance. You'll be missed a lot less than HMV.

A failing industry sneering at the failure of another. I know what I'll miss more.

Disappointing piece. The lack of compassion for the staff- who do give advice, btw - is appalling. Also what is a 'novice' buyer? Audiophiles know that vinyl and cds provide better sound quality than streaming. HMV is a great place to buy physical media.

Wow. What utter shite this article spouts. I always found what I was looking for in HMV. Old stuff, new stuff, you name it they had it. I for one will be sad when it’s gone from the high street.

I don’t need to pay for snide pretentious articles like this any more. Just cancelled my Guardian subscription.

Music was in our lives weekly growing up what to buy each week. We have good or bad far too many other persuits and choices now. Therefore it's diluted how we operate. So it's another high street change. Another coffee chain or burger joint? Can we keep up!

What utter fucking drivel this article is. Inaccurate, devoid of any compassion and displays a lack of understanding of how the retail industry operates in the music world. Massive fail.

You know, I like the Guardian (and yes, I WOULD miss it if it went) but it does have a persistent problem with columnists writing what are apparently meant to be spiky opinion pieces but come across as 'Look how clever I am' columns. This is a pretty good example.

This is a very mean article - the writer may not have 'happy memories' of her local HMV but I certainly have great memories of HMV Henry St. and HMV Grafton St. (Dublin). We still have .TowerDublin and I'm very grateful that we do.

you’ve got about 18 months left yourselves!! 😂😂😂

I still go to the shop in Leeds, on the whole the staff are great and knowledgeable. I'll be very sad if it goes bought so much great stuff there. Not a good article, clearly little or no research done

Says the paper begging for donations to keep it afloat - people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones!

On every level this is a shitshow of an article. Poorly informed, poorly written. In some towns, HMV is probably the only record shop and employs over 2000 people. Suggest you ask a better journalist to write a fair response.

Horrible article. Also, the heads at HMV are trying to save it right now, so it might not go.

The outlook for the printed is disastrous also.

You guys are going to get a fucking kickin

🖕🖕🖕

What a ridiculously narrow perspective on life. There are many millions of us that developed our love of music through chains like HMV and did not have ‘bijou’ record shops to hand. I’ve just rediscovered the delight of my local HMV. Big shame if it goes

What an unnecessarily snobby and bitchy piece of writing. Nobody, NOBODY would miss the Guardian if it spontaneously imploded tomorrow. However, a great many music and film lovers will dearly miss HMV.

Disgusting reporting, hang your heads

Careful; many have said the same about print newspapers...

You lot next.

What a petty, kick-em-when-they're-down exercise in snobbery!

Are you the sun in disguise?

This utter trash from the Guardian. It's nothing but clickbait for the sake of traffic. Imagine being one of the employee's of HMV hoping and praying your job is going to be saved, only to wake up and read this liberal, twee garbage.

This highlighted quote is better than the actual content of this article. You’re lucky the article is so bad that no-one has even noticed it pennyanderson1

There could have been a piece here, but it’s lost in snobbery, cruelty, and flat out factual errors. Very poorly judged.

Disgusting headline and article

This article is stomach turning ... selfish, snobby and just idiotic

That’s nice of you...

We can replace newspapers like the guardian with boutique, online news blogs as well then?

This article is horrible click bait & completely misinformed & obviously written by someone who hasn’t stepped foot in a hmv for years. I worked in hmv for 15 years & in my experience my the staff are knowledgable & passionate about what they sell..

This article is wrong in so many ways. It also features glaring typos. Do your job properly before sneering at people who are going to lose theirs.

What a shit house of a piece of writing, remind me to send the the same in 10 yrs when you fold. Citing the rise of online news.

This is UTTER CRAP! This year Guardian has gone right down the pan, what a disgusting, disgraceful disregard for one of our iconic outlets.Articles like this completely unnecessary,we seem to love kicking a dog when it is down these days & its our country that is going to the dogs!

Thank you for the sneery article guys but we don’t need your condescension anymore 👋🏼

Penny Anderson is a writer and an artist apparently. You should definitely give up your day job. shame on you for publishing this drivel.

hmvNorwichChap is also has a fantastic cd and vinyl selection! Will be a real loss

Goodbye music we don’t need you anymore. You insult hmv with this flakey excuse for an article then ask for money to help you survive. hmvLiverpoolOne rocks. You’ve let yourselves down Anderson should be sent to the hate mail, she’d be welcome there

In that case, we don't need newspapers anymore either! What a lame article.

Nice !!!

So no need for the staff then eh?

Totally clueless & so out of your depth pennyanderson1 You have absolutely no idea how damaging this will prove to be for the music industry. Artists have it bad enough now let alone hmvtweets disappearing from the public eye. It’s catastrophic! A sad sad day.

ugh, what is wrong with you?

Funny i find ive more use for HMV than i do for snobby pretendy left journos at a newspaper which is sorely out of touch.

A disappointing read. Remember popping into HMV in Newcastle to browse their extensive Country music collection, and chatting to a very knowledgeable member of staff about their recommendations. The fact that this will all now be gone should not culturally be so easily dismissed.

This has made me reflect that I don’t need my app subscription, so have cancelled it.

Thank you for the newspapers, Guardian, but we don't need a printed press anymore. Good luck to all those whose jobs are at risk at HMV.

Thank you for your sniffy, out - of - touch opinionating, Guardian, but we don't need YOU anymore. 👍

Please, the Guardian, tell me more about once-proud household names struggling on in legacy formats while smaller competitors regularly outgun them.

What a load of bollocks this article is. Hang your heads in shame for posting it

What a silly and uninformed article. The ‘journalist’ should be ashamed. 2200 jobs are now in the air, They and their families must be worried sick.

Fancy writing so flippantly about a business closure which could result in 2,200 job losses. Callous and ill judged. And that's not even considering the poor research.

What a complete disregard for a while industry and the people that work in it! An ill informed, poorly researched, rash article, that’s been rushed out. From a ‘respected’ news reporting agency, that’s also facing the same battle with online bs physical sales. Utter Hypocrisy

Need the likes of Penny Anderson a lot less, hmvtweets has given me many hours of enjoyment and that is just from browsing my local shop never mind all the exclusive films I have purchased.

Ran two independent shops for 13 years. Worked for Virgin for 8 and went down with the ship. Administration is shit and so is this article who's valid points are nullified by the plethora of utterly stupid and clueless ones.

😁🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻

We don’t need newspapers either

“HMV was where you went to buy chart records (vinyl, cassette or later CDs) with your Christmas vouchers.” I once bought Slayer’s Reign in Blood there. Penny Anderson needs to give her head a wobble. are you still begging people for money?

Odd that one of the main playerss in the struggling printed press industry would opt for a headline line this. You'd think they'd be slightly more sympathetic, as they are likely to be in the same position in the not too distant future...

Such a poor excuse

What a shame. Some of best memories are bus into York to get a new single or album.

Thank you for the print Guardian, but soon we wont need you.

That is a hideously snobbish, poorly judged article (inevitable Bowie reference and all). I shop in Fopp and Monorail_Music AND HMV. It’s a huge loss to the high street and to any ‘true music fan.’

Wouldnt expect anything less from a paper who two weeks ago were pushing for 6 year olds to get the vote.

From the newspaper that begs for your cash.

Is this report ironic?

pennyanderson1 any actual need for this? Poor choice of article title, poor choice of timing and very poor taste

A silly and short sighted article that completely misses the point about the steady decline of our high streets and town centres.

What a strange take on people possibly losing their jobs. I was in HMV just before Christmas to buy a couple of CDs as gifts. Where would the writer like me to go for re-education?

A sad day if HMV finally closes. Last decent shop on the high street amid the £1 shops and clothes shops. If Penny Anderson does not recognise that then she is a miserable sod!

fuck the guardian. we don't need you anymore !

Let's face it as soon as pennyanderson1 turned this article in I'd be surprised if the Guardian & herself didn't expect everyone to have the reaction of 'Oh Fuck You' More and more of these opinion articles are just attention grabbing clickbait with no intension of sensitivity.

Over 2000 people are losing their jobs, you hateful creature.

Wow, that’s pretty bad And disgusting that.

Let’s all hope The Guardian is next to fold.

A decade or so ago HMV used to be one of my must go to spots during my UK visits

Sad to see the Guardian rejoicing in potential job loses. I always get a better, more informed chat about music from the staff in Fopp (er, part of HMV) than I ever do in Rough Trade.

So over 2k employees potentially stand to lose their jobs, at the worst possible time - of year and in retail - and this sack of shit opinion piece got sign-off? Truly vile.

This article is so ignorant and makes so many assumptions which is surprising coming from someone who works in the print media - how much tax did amazon pay last year vs hmv I wonder Using Fopp as an example vs HMV shows your ignorance

More crap journalism from the organisation that employs the turd that is OwenJones84 and his wanky opinions and begs for money at the end of each article. Not a fucking chance. Bad enough reading it fir free- not going to pay for it!

It’s OK in Penny’s warped world, when you lose your job, the Labour Govt will give you a house and you can live on benefits so why worry? I’ll informed, crap article - hope she gets fired

From the Guardian website “Penny Anderson is a writer and artist” I beg to differ. Maybe it should read ‘Penny Anderson isn’t a very knowledgable writer and thinks she’s an artist’ Penny clearly knows nothing about the ‘everyday’ music purchaser.

Except hmvtweets also sells Blu-rays/DVDs/geeky memoribila and more. So yay, in huge metropolitan areas you might find an indie record shop. That doesn't replace the entirity of HMV's offerings. Just the ones that pennyanderson1 cares about.

I know this is an opinion piece, but it seems unnecessarily spiteful and mean spirited. And let’s not forget that behind those CDs are real artists who need to earn a living ....

Bit cunty, this article. The Guardian talking about supply and demand, market forces, etc is like Piers Morgan pontificating on morality. You claim to know what you're on about, but all the available evidence suggests differently.

1) I'm not sure what her intentions were but the tone of this is snobbish and the generalisations are garbage. As someone who worked in a branch for a few years, it's incredibly patronising to imply staff with passion or knowledge were in on the ground.

This is the guardian, why would anybody expect anything less than this utter dross. Hopefully someone pulls them from administration!!

What about the 2200 people about to lose their jobs? Poor journaism, you'd think as newspaper sales fall you'd understand the situation! We don't need you wasting paper when it can be read online. So what's the difference?

Shithouse paper and shithouse article! Not suprised by a failing newspaper like this! Hopefully your demise happens sooner rather than later.

Hipster alert 🚨 HMV was too mainstream for Penny, she prefers rifling through independent record shops seeking out those rare white labels. Yes, of course she does🤦‍♂️hmv

This is terrible.

Don’t need you either to be fair.

Hi pennyanderson1, HMV can survive, with a new business model.

Hmmm, , hmmmmmmmmm

Shocked that the author has locked account - puts something like this out there but will not my engage with those clearly better places to understand the high street. Shame on you Penny - coward.

Utter rubbish we need a major retailer, the knock on effect of less product being pressed will create an increase in price for indies, this will also affect small venues and industry jobs ... you would think in the declining print market you would be more smymathetc

Total edgelord pish.

Actually we do. As many films you can buy on blu ray or dvd are not available on any streaming platforms.

Jesus, you’re full of festive cheer Penny. Poor article. I have many great memories of buying music in hmv and independent record shops. There is a place for both. The high street will be poorer without it. Thoughts with all those who could lose their jobs. Good luck ✌️

What tosh.

This is awful journalism. Cold, uneducated and without purpose.

The staff at the Cardiff branch of HMV are incredible. Their knowledge and enthusiasm for film would put many a critic to shame. They deserve far more than this.

Terrible article written from the perspective of someone detached from reality. HMV has served people well in the past even if it’s not to ‘everyone’s’ tastes. pennyanderson1 at least proof read your articles before publishing such drivel.

With HMV and Fopp disappearing from the high street it will be harder than ever to discover classic/foreign film. One of my great joys is spending hours browsing the aisles and coming across a film I’ve never seen before. Streaming services don’t cater for this!

How dare Penny Anderson say such a thing when 2,200 are at risk of losing their jobs.... many people want to just pop in for a CD. Not EVERYONE wants to buy online; some people want to support the music industry and if HMV is the nearest port of call...

As if we needed it, another example of ‘liberals’ only having a single view of how things should be. The word ‘bijou’ is particularly enlightening.

And I hope you loose you job too Penny Anderson. What an evil thing to say.

Disappointing read from the Guardian - the writer adopts a snobbish, holier than thou attitude and clearly doesn’t appreciate the reality of retail.

Shit article.

You tell me about the quality of your journalism and then you publish this! What degrees of music fan? You don’t get a badge. I weep for the future.

Guardian is now mostly shit, what a shame

How dare HMV make recorded music affordable and accessible for everyone? This article is 10/10 garbage, would not buy

I don’t know why people commenting here are surprised by articles like this. is a snobby, elitist rag that is written by snobby, elitist, champaign socialists. In the past few years its has become a joke.

Oh Penny Anderson. I've shopped at hmv since I was a kid. It's been, and continues to be, such an important piece of my life as a music fan. I shall be so sad to see it disappear from the high street.

I still want and need Spudulike

Who wrote this utter drivel

What a load of shite. As someone who lives in a town where HMV is the only music retailer it'd be greatly missed. Today I took my 5 year old in there; we looked at Beatles, Bowie, Aretha, Stevie, Michael Jackson CDs for £5. I buy vinyl there as often as Fopp or Piccadilly.

What a load of bollocks ; thought you were better than that. Lowering yourself to Daily Fail standards with poorly researched opinion pieces void of any facts. Bought imported Japanese horror B-movies from HMV for years.

Just like the coal miners

Ironic that this article is written by a paper that spends most of its time begging for money throughout its articles...

You're full of rubbish. Trashy article. HMV is essential.

The Guardian's time will be up soon. Constantly begging for money, moving even further up its own backside and circulation falling every year. It now has the lowest circulation of any national newpaper by a country mile. Failing

Maybe if they retool to support independent music and producers, they might find a niche that Spotify/Netflix and other on demand digital media outlets are leaving wide open. But no, they’d rather charge 20 quid for a cd of music anyone can access for free and in very easy ways.

Agree with all comments against this article. I don’t shop in hmvtweets as much as I used to but I met many of the bands that influenced my music taste growing up in the Birmingham branch, and often buy records and the occasional blu ray in FOPPBristol

What a load of bollocks this article is. The sheer snobbery of this is a disgrace. I shop in “Indies” but as a kid spent many hours buying music in HMV and is a staple of the high street so losing It would be sad especially for all those potentially losing their jobs. Twat!

Total click bait 'journalism', Im going to have to check out her art because her writing is shit.

Sneery snobby bullshit, that does you no credit at all. Dancing on graves is bad karma

This is an absolute joke of an article. Snobbish, elitist, Ill informed and poorly researched, by a nobody who doesn't seem to like the people in danger of losing their jobs or the customers they live to serve. I worked at HMV for 9 years and I for one wish them all the best!!

pennyanderson1 garbage article

Shameful article Penny Anderson have you ever been in HMV? Brilliant staff in Aberdeen

This article is a pile of nonsensical shite... the author can barely string a sentence together!

This article is a defamatory and inaccurate depiction of a much-loved national brand that many of us have grown up with. If HMV fails to survive another administration, it will be a huge loss for many music fans and the high street too.

After reading this snotty, mean-spirited rubbish I just want to say thank you for the ‘news’ but I don’t need you anymore.

We don’t need you anymore Guardian like the rest of the dirty stinking rags.

Crappy, snobbish and in pretty poor taste. Seems to be randomly name checking a few independents whilst not knowing who owns Fopp. HMV (and others) were perfectly able to coexist with independents, especially outside the cosy metropolitan world.

So Liverpool doesn't have a mainstream - chart etc - music store anymore. And there's nothing to mourn, that's somehow progress, just move on. Oh, and never mind the 2000 jobs. How fucking cretinous can you get?

Well i NEED hmvtweets

absolute state o’ this

HMV was always my first stop when I went to buy records (inc imports) or CDs after Our Price, Virgin and Andys Records. Always found music mad staff in the Liverpool store, but what killed off me shopping there was the mid 00s and most CDs being £18.99.

What a terrible article, factually incorrect nonsense. Oh, and the irony of the headline 'HMV, we don't need you any more' when below every Guardian article is a begging letter asking for money. Who do we not need, I wonder?

HMV could still trade on its heritage name. Music has always been free. The formats and delivery mechanism is what changes.

Awful, elitist and snobbish article. I've worked in our price and virgin and know people who have and still work in hmv and they are just as passionate and knowledgeable as anyone who works in a 'boutique','independent' record shop! Hope they can save it!

A tragedy for the staff if they loose their jobs but let's be honest in the days when independent record stores abounded serious music fans wouldn't be seen dead in HMV except perhaps for the post Christmas sales.

Thanks for the 'news', Guardian, but we don't need you anymore.

I was with HMV for 13y started on an employment placing then taken on full time went on to be the singles/vinyl buyer in Leeds then on to work in Head Office as the singles buyer for the chain. I could write your column I reckon you would sink trying to advice people on music.

The demise of the high street is only inevitable if you keep writing rubbish like this.

Absolute load of uninformed rubbish, I worked for HMV late 90’s through early 2000’s & as far as knowledge goes, that was a huge part of the interview process, every staff member had an expertise in particular genres & we built a great shop as did many others.

So you're happy that people are losing their jobs and that the high street loses another shop because of an elitist viewpoint of music buying/listening! Shameful.

An awful article. Music is for everyone, not just the obsessives. HMV was a gateway to a whole world of music for many teens and onwards.

Very poor article.

What bollocks. I hope your quinoa’s gone off.

Hi pennyanderson1, I worked in those big chains for 9 years. I can assure you I was highly knowledgeable on music and our regular customers were those looking for collectible records/Japanese imports and the things you seem to think are only found in ‘Indie’ stores.

Noted that you have locked your twitter account so we can't respond to your 'journalism'. Was going to invite you to stand behind the till in our shop tomorrow, to get an insight into administration. It's not pretty.

Surely losing a mass market music retailer like HMV puts another nail in the coffin of physical format? Without a big volume outlet to sell to, it gives labels good reason to withdraw from producing vinyl and CDs purely for independents 🙁

Do the editors not ensure that journalists fact check their articles? Fopp is owned by HMV. I hope that pennyanderson1 isn't suddenly told 'we don't need you anymore'...

Can't wait until your rag of a paper goes the same way 🍾🍾🍾

Disgusting piece of journalism. I lost my job with HMV six years ago and was out of work for nearly two years. Maybe have a look around and see if you could live like you are now with no job !!!

Dreadful article. What goes around comes around…

Speak for yourself!

This is a really poor piece of journalism, ill conceived, badly written, poorly edited and not fact checked before it was published. Interesting that it's not open for comments online, and the journalist in question had a pop at her critics before locking her twitter account.

What a horrible, elitist piece of ill-informed nonsense.

Total shite. And then they lament the death of the high street.

What a ridiculous article, physical shops are vital. I totally enjoy my visits to my local HMV where they have staff knowledgeable in films and music. As there are no other record shops within 30 miles of my home where do I buy new music now?

'there is little need for a cavernous, everything-under-one-roof music emporium.' On what basis? I think you underestimate public demand for going into a music retailer and expecting to be able to purchase anything and everything.

Disappointed to read such snobby, ill-informed & poorly edited writing. Aside from the lack of fact checking, how can you be a “novice” music fan? Are there grades that you progress through? From “entry level” chart CD buyer to “expert” dusty vinyl crate digger - seriously

Seems like this article was written by someone who doesn't have a clue about the retail space and how important HMV/Chain stores are for labels, distros and artists. This is going to put some labels out of business if HMV closes down, which adds to the horror of more job losses.

Awful article. Factually inaccurate on numerous levels. I've worked in music retail for 25+ years; indies, Rough Trade, Fopp & HMV (Oxford St & Bath). HMV own Fopp. Specialist DJs shopped regularly. Tons of bands formed. This'll be catastrophic for distros, labels & the industry.

Nasty article. I used to love getting my music from HMV.

HMV is the only place you can still buy the non-chart stuff in both music and film. Yes smaller shops will help but what if you have none of them in your town? Unless we are all happy with only physical access to the same chart stuff you can get at Tesco, this is tragic news.

If the government doesn't support the high street, why should the public?

Somewhat ignorant puff piece - true music stores fleeced customers with high margins on cd's. Failed to see or turned a blind eye to the rise of sdigital downloads. HMV had decent buyers in the non chart related genres. The vinyl revolution is over blown, prices are excessive.

A bit of a snotty article.

We should be supporting high street shopping / retailers as we know them...
