TheLastOfUs creator Neil Druckmann details Joel Miller's new character traits specifically added for the upcoming HBO television adaptation: 'We had a conversation about the toll Joel’s life would have had on him physically.'

The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann details the painful changes that were made to Joel Miller specifically for the upcoming HBO show. Initially serving as co-director for the original PlayStation 3 video game of the same name, Druckmann enlisted Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin to bring the critically acclaimed property to the small screen.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In a recent interview with The New Yorker, Druckmann reveals several changes that were made to Joel for HBO's The Last of Us. Although much of his character remains faithful to the original game, the co-creator lists several new show-specific traits for the character. Read what Druckmann says below:

“We had a conversation about the toll Joel’s life would have had on him physically. So, he’s hard of hearing on one side because of a gunshot. His knees hurt every time he stands up. I guess there’s a tone where Tom Cruise can do anything. But I like my middle-aged people middle-aged.”Why the Changes to Joel Work Druckmann and Mazin have repeatedly assured fans that the Last of Us television series will be a faithful adaptation of the source material.

Video games offer players a uniquely interactive way to experience a story. Where films, television shows, and books are a passive media, video games put the player in the shoes of the protagonist and give them agency over several decisions throughout the story. However, hindering the player's control with physical impairments could lessen the experience for the gamer. Television allows the writer certain creative freedoms that would be difficult to achieve in video games.

What the Show Keeps the Same Regardless of the character changes, much of the Last of Us story and characters appear to remain the same. Early set photos and videos revealed that locations from the video game have been meticulously recreated for the show, including a small suburban neighborhood fans would remember as the setting for a tense sniper battle and the hospital that hosts one of the most dramatic moments in the entire story.

The Last of Us Creator Was Terrified at First Movie Plans Before the HBO SeriesThe Last of Us' creator was actually terrified at the initial movie plans before the TV show [...] You can't make that into a faithful movie without butchering so much of the growth in Joel's & Ellie's relationship. It would've been so rushed & forced & unearned. Series helps keep alot of that intact, not everything but you have those moments to breathe & take in the story.
