Wide-release films, meaning those shown in more than 2,000 theaters for multiple weeks, earned $7.23 billion in North America this year through Christmas, according to box office tracker Comscore . Once the new year arrives, the domestic box office total for 2022 will likely come in at around $7.35 billion, Comscore said.
Total domestic box office grosses through Christmas of this year represent an increase of 68% over 2021, when many theaters remained closed and audiences were largely still apprehensive about returning to theaters for fear of Covid-19. But 2022 grosses are still off by roughly one-third compared with 2019, the last prepandemic year, when the total North American box office totaled $11 billion.
The main issue, according to studio executives and industry observers, is lack of supply—fewer big movies means fewer tickets sold. Another factor is consumers’ appetite for moviegoing given the growth of streaming and persistent Covid-19 concerns.

They just need to read the room better. Topgun had a superstar actor, it had thrills that everyone loves, it had jets which fascinate people with their tech, high speed, and weaponry. Most importantly though, it had hope. Hope is what the Country needs right now. Hope = X factor

I haven't been out to a movie for several years. Our local public library gets almost all of the new movies in DVD or Blu-ray When I see DVD''s about to come out, I put a hold on the ones that look good to me. Usually I receive them before they are streamed.
Let's face it, most of the recent American movies suck! If you really want a good movie, check out the Turner Classic movies which can be found on HBO max

Streaming killed the box office. People used to be more eager to go and see a film in theaters when they knew they would have to wait months to rent it or own it on dvd, etc. Now, as soon as a movie hits streaming, it’s also available for free on bootleg streaming sites.
