For households across Canada, gathering in front of the television on Christmas Day to watch Queen Elizabeth II’s annual speech is a long-standing tradition. This Sunday, King Charles III will continue it forward.

For households across Canada, gathering in front of the television on Christmas Day to watch Queen Elizabeth II’s annual speech is a long-standing tradition.

“People have that Christmas Day tradition to see the Queen but that’s going to be different this year,” said Finch, whose national organization focuses on advocacy and education. Very few Canadians have seen a change in monarchy in their lifetime, but Brock University associate professor of political science, Paul Hamilton, agreed with Finch, calling the transition not a break from history, but continuity.

“Especially, I think, under Elizabeth because she was kind of an accidental Queen but she was really good in the role and she seemed to really bring out these really potent qualities of loyalty and affection from people of all political stripes.”

Loved the Queen and her speeches. Listening to Charles is nauseating. My mother calls him the “tampon”, cause, well, you know. And now he is King Tampon. How can anyone listen to him without thinking of him up Camilla’s cooze. Head first. Eeuuww.

It is one of CBC's best kept secrets paid for by the office of the Monarchy.

Never heard of that in my life 😂😂😂 WJC is a realy christmas tradition

Hahahahahaha ah ben oui 😂 On s’en fou du discours d’un monarque d’un autre pays.

Is this a joke or just fake news? Nobody I have ever met has listened to this message and I kinda liked QE2.

Nothing says backwards like a false claim that this is a tradition in peoples homes

Is this April fool

Ha ha ha

«a long-standing tradition.»😂😂😂 Total Fake news.

Hahaha you made me laugh big time 🤣🤣

What?

Pauvre lady Diana!

HAHAHA ! Sure, right after building our igloo in the backyard 🤭 Truth : 98% of canadians don’t care about royalty.

Never

When the top census guy comments about your statement and says that it unbelievable... Time to find a new editor and invest in fact checking

I've read about 30 of the queen's speeches. Very vapid for the most part. All about 'we're in this together' and 'think of the families that can't be together' or 'we must appreciate what we have'... over and over and over again.... Great for falling asleep.

Hahaha as if.

N'mporte quoi

I remember an old Bye Bye mocking the queen saying 'Peuple canadien français' with a movement of her head toward left. This is how I learned about her annual speech.

Useless !! Just fu$&ing useless ! He has never been and he'll never be my king ! Same for his mother ! Screw the monarchy !

Who? Conrad Black and his extended family of sycophants and heirs?

Really? Never heard of a Christmas discourse . Why the hell should canadians listen to the speech of a foreign leader ?

Straight upvoting all the nays here and pushing AbolishTheMonarchy TO Star you are so out of touch; you can’t write this into reality lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣

What a strange take, why couldn't you have just said that King Charles was continuing the tradition, this is why we no longer trust you.

Really? This is BS, I don't know any Canadian(S) who ever watched QE II annual speech. And I'm 56yo Canadian.

The Star just lies.

Hahahahahahaha Canada here, and we don’t watch those crusty old people

only loser families would do this

My family are British - we have never done this and I don't know anyone under 80 who does.

46 Christmases now and I don’t even recall hearing about this let alone anyone watching it, perhaps I’ve been a bigger recluse than I imagined.

Fakenews

Hahaha!!! Who watched that?

Voyons donc! Vous vivez où au Canada?

Le Québec n’est pas le Canada. JeanMarcLeger1 PaulPlamondon BlocQuebecois RadioCanadaInfo corrigez les faits, soyez honnêtes.

Yeah of course! 😅Let’s keep “the tradition” 😂 😆 🤣… Clowns!

hu? nop.

😂😂😂

Long standing tradition? First time hearing or reading about it lol

Lol, in what world ?

On which planet do you live on?

What are you guy talking about? That is not a thing and never was.

Damn, didn’t know Toronto Star is part of Royal Rota. God save the king eh🤣🤣🤣🤣

No. Not . Never. Don’t know anyone that does .

Imagine giving a shit about this sausage fingered old pervert bitch

Malaisant…

Where do you live? It's such a false statement.

I really don't know anybody that does listen to the Queen or King speech.... this is fake news !!

What a load of crap! Why would you make this up.

In my family the Queens Christmas Broadcast was a long-standing tradition. It characterized our Christmas along with family gatherings, good food and church. I am proud to uphold these. traditions. I thought that HM the King’s speech was relevant and timely.

Nobody's no more watching old guy ou don't means nothing....only cost for canadiens ou love our country

Nope, never watched it . Nice try Toronto Star.

🤣🤣🤣get serious

What?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

wat

A tradition, wtf are you talking about?

WTF!!?

No it's not

How about no? We don’t do that. Never met anyone who did. And I’m Canadian who married British. Neither does the family in law.

Me mum's a Brit, and a monarchist. Me, opposite. I was aware of it as a kid. So she listens, and I sure as he'll don't care. Not in my house. AbolishTheMonarchy

You might be thinking about households across England, . Down with the Saxe-Coburg and Gothas!

Its really not. You must know another Canada...

Not. A. Thing.

More bullshit misinformation from the Toronto Star. I have yet to see a factual story from this useless rag. Should change their name to the Toronto Star Wipe.

Hahahahaha a hahahahaha never did never will.

Peut-être dans le ROC. Au Québec, on s'en c******.

Can you do some journalism for once and give us a % of 🇨🇦 households who watch this annually to call it a tradition? Because, if I do a survey of the people I know, results would be 0%

Fake news. LMAO.

did someone hack your account? 🙄

No time to waiste.

never heard of that once in my life... 🤨

News to me, i never heard it and don't know anybody who cares about this. Been here 62 years. We need Monarchy as much as a fish needs a bicycle.

I've never watched the queen speech

Fixed: FOUR households across Canada, gathering in front of the television on Christmas Day to watch Queen Elizabeth II’s annual speech is a long-standing tradition.

Sure. Right after we watch the Pope.

Oh really?!?

Fake news

Tokebec icitte tabarnak

Are you OK?

🤣 Qui sont les imbéciles ?

No it’s not a tradition. I have never watched the queens speech nor do I know some one who does.

It may be a tradition for *your* family, and sure, do your thing, but don't claim that it is a tradition 'across Canada'. I have *never* heard of this. Terrible journalism: false, pro-monarchist and offensive.

Elle est très bonne celle là. Go Ti-ronto Star go

I am 70 and and all the people I know never spent Christmas time watching this useless speech.

BHahahahahhahaahha 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Bunch of nonsense. Never heard of anyone in Quebec watching this speech, ever

Born and raised in Canada for 47 years and don’t know a single person who does this.

how are they still relevant...

I think people who lived through World War II have always been more interested.

Fuvk king

🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

La réalité parallèle🤣 du Star

Not a tradition at all.

47 Christmas's and this is the 1st time I've heard of this.

Pas au Québec.

Another long standing tradition is the Toronto Star making up stuff out of its butt.

Lol who are these 4 families that gather in front of the TV and watched her speech?

There are dozens of us, dozens!

Really? I only know one person who might do that.....

72% of Canadians believe the monarchy should be abolished. Your story has no credibility in 2022.

Charles who?

Totally utterly disappointed with TheKingsSpeech. There was zero canada in that speech.

Vous nous niaisez ?

Merde merde merde... Je l'ai encore manqué cette année. Mon petit côté canayen colonisé ne s'en remettra pas NimporteQuoi polqc polcan Roi

I have 46 years old and I was only made aware of this tradition when I lived for three years in the United Kingdom. So, unless you want to ignore the two solitudes, don’t use « across Canada » for this kind of tradition.

Never done that... Such a tradition eh

In Quebec it’s not a tradition to listen to the monarch’s speech. And if you’d tell people on the street about it, I’m sure they’d say it’s antiquated.

Come on TS, you know that't total BS. Noboby gather to listen it. 🤦 Are you that desparate for clic bait!

Absolutely not.

Highly recommend the Big Fat Quiz of the year on British tv. You can find it on youtube usually. Had no idea that even existed. But maybe it’s because I’m a French Canadian?

I’ve never watched the Queen’s Christmas speech and I’m going to continue by not watching the Kings Christmas speech.

Non.

Are Toronto Star's office in London ? I don't know any Canadian who did listen to this boring and useless speech.

What are you talking about Are you serious? really? Wow! I would like to see a real survey on that! I know nobody, I repeat, nobody who watch those greetings, not today, not years before, nobody, never! The Toronto Star is less accurate than ever! Too bad!

Bulls shits!

we dont give a fuck about the king

Fake news once again.

《Long-standing tradition》?! 😂

Cute for brittish folks still living in the 1600’

Trust the mainstream media.

I am 60 y.o. and was not aware of the Queen annual speech.

J'ai 56 ans et très franchement, je ne savais même pas que ce discours existait. Tradition, tradition... whattradition

Who cares

Who cares about the worst criminal institution that's ever set foot on Earth ? 🤮👎🏿

Pouahahahaha fake news star

Tradition? Never even heard about this… And I don’t know anyone who watched this! Seriously, where did you take that info! 😂

Je pense pas, non.

WTF are you talking about?

Are you serious? These are parasites.

Long standing tradition where? That is such BS…

At 44 years old, I never knew that even existed.

Ridiculous.

Mum watches every year

We do what now? huh

🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Dude. What Canadian households are you talking to? No.

Say no one ever

Pourquoi mentir Toronto Star? J’ai jamais vu cela ni même entendu quelqu’un faire cela.

It's like watching money

In whose households was this a tradition? I grew up & still live in Canada. We never once watched her speech. Dang, I don’t think I even knew she gave one. Maybe this was your tradition. Not a country’s tradition. Is this an opinion piece?

Complete fabrication. Does not happen.

I live in Canada all my life and never once watch a Christmas speech by these people. We don’t have time for that.

The Queen did a Christmas speech, but really, Canadians do not incorporate this into their Christmas traditions. And with Charles in charge now, it is even less likely. Very few Canadians are interested in Charles and Camilla.

I've ever watched it...well Cathy Jones doing it on 22 Minutes.

I’m Canadian. I’ve never watched the address

Those are alternative facts...J'ai jamais, jamais regardé le discours de la reine en 48 ans.

Get him to.......

Never watched tht nonsense. The People's Princess Diana died, & so did the Monarchy in Canada. hope Rupert Murdoch has nt acquired the Toronto star with embellishment statements ApologizeToMeghan StopHateForProfit UN_Women CdnHumanRights GGCanada AbolishTheMonarchy

Canada Media Ethics 🇨🇦, AbolishTheMonarchy Slavey NotMyKing ApologizeToMeghan

Who cares its across the pond

Well...that was a bit of fun to read these comments. Just goes to show that Monarchy really means squat anymore. As a Canadian here I knew about the Xmas message thing (thanks to my granny) but never watched them. And now that Chuck is in charge, can't be bothered.

AbolishTheMonarchy

Who wants to watch that Tampon King who is both a racist and an adulterer?

I always watch the speech... I am glad to hear he's continuing it... I don't watch it on TV but I do enjoy watching it once it gets posted on YouTube

Never heard of it. Where do you even watch it?

WEFpuppet

All 10 of them.

Where are these Canadians? Not in my house, that's for sure.

Lmao this thread

Not a king.

We've never heard about this speech in Quebec.

Righteousness71 Canadian never watched it why start now. 🙄 Please

This isn't a tradition in Canada

What. Didn't even know this speech was a thing.

Did the writer bother to check the ratings?

A majority of Canadians want to AbolishTheMonarchy, and won't be watching this PropagandaAtChristmas. NotMyKing

Never in my 53 years have I done this nor has anyone in my family or friends… 😂

I grew up with watching her and I know several people who do watch...please become more open-minded and curious about many traditions that influenced our history

'We interrupt what you were trying to watch...'

My household has never done this. Y'all just make shit up.

Can you show the data year on year?

50+ Christmas's in Canada. Never heard of this. Won't be bothering.

Nobody watches that shit.🤨

I had no idea that she did a speech at Christmas! I don't know one person who actually watches this!

They forgot the numbers '15-20' between the words 'For' and 'households.'

This is such a pile of shit. I’ve never done this in my entire life and neither has anyone in my extensive Canadian family, and neither have I heard of any of my neighbours doing this. You are utterly out of touch with actual Canadians.

I’m only here for the comments 🤣🤣 King Charles who We don’t care about an adulterous who call himself king!

dwjudson

Who the fuck actually did that

Never heard of that

How many households? Do some journalism and give us numbers.

Never

Is He selling toilet bowl cleaner or green house gases

I did not know this even existed and now that I do know I have zero desire to watch

I don't know anyone who watches this.

This isn't a parody acct, is it? Never have I ever sat with my family to watch the Queen's address. Who actually has this as a tradition

Long Live King Chuck! Long Live King Chuck!

Crazy, 50 years old now and I’ve never met a single Canadian who does this.

Never in my 40+ years have I ever myself, or heard of anyone doing this before today.

Lol

Why? Why? Why?

I’ve never known about this.

Canadian here and didn't realize that was a thing. I have never watched the Queen's address and def won't start watching the King's.

No one I know does that…

Lol nice try 😂

Bollocks.

Fake News ☝🏽 🇨🇦 should leave the British Monarchy and save the 2Billion per year.

This was a thing? Never even knew it happend.

What, in the actual fk are you talking about? This is not the 1960’s. We all have better things to do today. Why are you so out of touch with reality?

When I lived in the UK, never watched it. Here 8 hours behind, never going to happen. Maybe it is just you and the other media people.

We do what now?

Yeah. Almost nobody does this.

Official retraction for this fantasy.

Ha ha nope.

Monarchy is s white supremacist thing in canada. I will rather watch paint dry than watch that nonsense

Never done it. Never met anyone who has ever done it.

Nope.

Lots of Christmas cheer in the replies to this article! The monarch’s Christmas message to the Commonwealth has been broadcast in Canada every year since 1932, including on the CBC since its founding in 1936. Merry Christmas. God bless you, every one.

As a Canadian in my 40s, I've never heard of this, infection I didn't even know the queen did a speech on TV. At Christmas

Weird. I've lived in Canada for 66 years and never once watched this. In fact, the whole idea of the monarchy is repulsive to me. 🤷

He did a beautiful job. I was watching to see how he'd do, as Charles can often come across as pompous. I believe each and every word was carefully considered, he was sincere, and the message was one of gratitude for helpers, inclusion of all faiths, and hope for the future.

Until this very minute, I had no idea she even did this

Drag queen story hours are bad enough, but on Christmas!

What the hell are you talking about, what speech?

Source?

lmao,,,really i would rather know which liberal cabinet minsiters have been penetrated by the WEF

But not wishing a happy kwanza? Laughable and expected

I’ve never heard of anybody doing this.

Have never done this. Not a Canadian tradition.

I have never done this.

Here’s all the people in Canada excitedly huddling together to watch the speech from a new different withered old monarch

Will it include details about his brother raping a girl?

king in name only

Lol no one does this

robrousseau is this true?

No it isnt

I will continue to not watch

I've watched the Christmas Message every year for as long as I can remember, and this year will be no exception. Long live the King!

literally who?

Literally nobody cares

Hes not king. You are spreading slander. He is Prince Charles until the agreed upon date of coronation, may 7, 2023.

As useless as a midget with a yo-yo

do canadians still watch cable tv?

Did the old girl mail u that tampon ? Or brought it over in person . How can this man be respected Ever .
